Thank you. Your shot(s) are always a treat. Glad to see that the 40D can produce such superb shots.
Question: Were you using your 100-400mm?

Wow, That is Impressive Mitch
Got to love that 6.5 FPS of the 40D I bet you have several in that series you can use!!

Thanks Carlton and Pat. This one just kind of floated by the other day, so I took his picture. :)
No, I no longer own the 100-400L IS, or any 400 now. I used a 300L non-IS and a Sigma 1.4x TC on the 40D and tripod. :)

Carelton, you need to check out some of his earlier work, Mitch has some awesome in-flight shots of Eagles, this one fits right in there with the rest of them.

Thanks Trevor, I am feeling real comfortable with eagles in flight now. :)
Carlton, I talked to this guy yesterday. He said he is willing to relocate to England, but, he doesn't fly coach, and he has to bring his tree.

Thanks Henry. Yup, the 40D is doing good. Not so different from the 30D that I don't know what it's doing. :)

Thanks Joayne and Cooper. The conditions are much better this year than last. The way the open water is this year brings them in a lot closer to where I can stand. Plus a better camera. :)

Thanks Outlaw and Norm. Yes, the background on this and others this year is much better than last, a whole different angle and position on the river. Still close, a city block or two, but completely different view. This is looking directly up the Mississippi river main channel. You can see one of the red buoy's frozen into the ice, under his wing. :)

Thanks Andrew and Ben, and your welcome, enjoy. I plan on having a 16x20 print made this week, sort of as a test to see how they hold up to that big a print. :)

Thats a pretty shot Mitch. As someone who has taken thousands of eagle images I know how hard it is to get light under the dark wings while in turn not over exposing the head. You either got dang lucky or are getting crafty with the new 40D. I love the background and every thing about this and think it's one of the finest all around eagle photos that have been posted here.
I know you don't use USM but the eye needs to pop more. I ran a quick pass with it selectively sharpening that area. Maybe a tad over done but I only have had 3 hours of sleep and been up for just 10 minutes so maybe my eyes aint focused yet. You also might want to ever so slightly level out the horizon and then you got your self not only a wall hanger but a prize winner.
One for POTN Volume # 3.

Thanks Downy, Mark, Mike and Dan.
Mike, for some reason, the shots I host and link to here seem a little softer than when I use them as a screensaver or view them from my hard drive. I had already sharpened this using LAB Color mode USM and the one I use for a screensaver seems sharp enough. I was afraid to overdo it. :)
Dan, your gonna love the 300. I use it most of the time with a 1.4x TC on it, but when I can get close, I take it off and it's the sharpest lens I've ever seen. :)

Understand your plight. I recently wanted to post a photo here but when I went to preview it looked so crappy I decided not to.

Mitch, fantastic shot!!! The 40d really is a great camera. You'll be just fine with that 16x20 print. I've done a few engagement sessions with the camera, and one ordered a 16x20. Plus I did my car shot in 16x20.

Thanks Hawk. I am more or less new to printing seriously good images. I am having it done at a print house where you just upload the files and tell them what size. I had some of last years eagles printed recently at 11x14 and they came out amazing good for starting with a 30D RAW file. They looked as good as the 8x10's from the same files. I was planning on ordering some 16x20's soon, but will use these new 40D files for that. I know they will look good. :)

I used Adorama for my first 16x20, and had it done metallic. You might want to consider that also; makes the image really pop out at you. I now use a lab close to work; they aren't bad pricewise, but not always as cheap as the other labs that aren't even close to me distance-wise.

Thanks Andy. It was one of those silent cold days too. There were periods of no noise at all and the eagle were silent flyers. I have heard them rustle their feathers when they shake them out. I can be quite loud if your close enough, but this day they were silent. :)
