View Full Version : Question about calibration (Huey Pro)

So I calibrate my monitor frequently, but recently I have become more picky about the results of my prints so I have just started noticing that the color is actually off. The reason, I believe, is because I ave been somewhat fudging one of the steps because it didn't really make any sense to me. I'm hoping someone on here can help.

Here are the screens

I understand this one, and usually the answer is no, which will bring me to this screen:

The text "lower it" here doesn't make any sense because they are talking about 2 different settings. I messed with both and the contrast seems the make them match, so I think I have that one figured out. It's the next one here that boggles the mind:

No matter how I adjust my brightness, the only two circles that look even close are the very center grey one and the second from the center. Everything else is split through the entire brightness range.

Has anyone experienced the same issues?

Thanks,
Tom

Don't know the software, but does pressing the "?" give any clues?

That aside: If you set the contrast and brightness to 75%, what does your calibration look like?

Is there a way to get the software to calibrate to a set "target" (say: 6500K; 100 Cd/m^2)?
Or to set the brightness / contrast while the metering device tells you "more" or "less" instead of "eyeballing" ?

Wow, oddly enough, I don't think I have ever clicked on the "?" so I'm not sure about that. In regards to the 75-75, I just did that on the last calibration and I'm not getting good results. My prints are currently a bit more red tha I want them. I'm using soft proofing in CS3, epson R1800 color management off/photoshop managing.

PS- no you cannot set a target, and yes you have to eyeball.

I can't help you with your Contrast & Brightness issues, but it strikes me that "redness" won't be solved by addressing C&B. That would be more of a profiling issue than a calibration one.

When do you use the hardware device - is it in the next "Measure" step?

I don't believe that the adjustment of the C&B would directly affect the redness, but I imagine it would affect the calibration, which starts directly after the third screenshot.

Strictly speaking, what you're doing now is calibration - the next step is profiling.

I just downloaded and read the User Guide. It describes everything in detail EXCEPT this bit which you're having trouble with. Very frustrating!

Tom,

I have the VERY SAME problem, so you are not alone. I can't wait to hear any feedback on this issue. I have been sort of guessing as well, but I know my calibration can be better. The wording is very confusing.
