Personally I like the 2nd one better, more detail.

I like the second one. Because your main subject is too small in the first one, and you shouldn't have to "look" for it. Now if the background was the main item, the first one is best! But that's just me. Aloha!

Second one--beats the devil out of me why.

Thanks guys. I agree. I like the perspective in the first and the DOF a bit more, but the DOF is better I think in the 2nd and the flower is much stronger as a subject. Someone suggested I crop out the orangish flower from the top photo as being a slight distraction, that may be another reason 2 is better. Also, and I'm not sure about this, but the 2nd may be small enough where fotopic.com didn't "mess with it"

Tell you a little secret, you get even closer to it, and most will choose it over the second one.... I wonder why that is......

I disagree with you completely. This isn't a closeup shot. I didn't want to get "too" close to it, because I didn't want it to be a closeup.

I beg your pardon.... perhaps I didn't express myself correctly... I was only trying to say that most people would pick the photo in which the flower appears the biggest. Did not have to do with your particular shot. And now that you bring it up,you should try a close up. Aloha!

funny how defensive folks can be after *asking* for a critique....

anyhow, i find the orange/blue ring in the first one to be a distraction. is it an intentional element in your composition? if so, what is your intent?

the second one, while fulfilling my love of close-up (oops!) photography, could stand to either have the purple flower placed on the right-side of the frame, unless of course the leaves on the right are an intentional part of your composition. also, the light-colored dry grass stalk exiting the frame to the left of the flower just pulls my eye right over to the speaker on the left side of my monitor ;-)

i find the light to be flat on both -- a reflector or diffused flash burst from a peripheral direction would liven this up.
