Well, it finally happened. My 10D fell to the ground with my 550EX attched to it. It fell from the bed to a carpeted floor. I heard a distinct snap and knew I had trouble.

The damage seemed innocent enough. The metal hot shoe on the 10D was bent, easily enough fixed, just bent it back to place. But my poor flash head, the plastic base (that attaches to the hotshoe) is cracked enough so that if I continue to use it, it will snap off.

Any ideas or suggestions?

It looks like the base can be removed and I would hate to send it in to be repaired because I know it can take weeks but...

help.

The foot on the 550EX is designed to be the weak link in exactly such a situation. If you're brave, I think you can order a replacement foot. Otherwise, just send it in. It shouldn't cost too much to fix.

Mine is broke also. I didn't know that you could simply order new plastic bases for the speedlite.

the foot of the flash is made weak with the though that one of the things will give: either flash foot or camera hot shoe. the foot is easier to replace.

any camera repair shop will fix this in less than a day. if they are "Canon authorized" they should have plenty of shoes in a box somewhere.

this is actually a very comon thing to happen to flashes.
