Just trying to figure out how to shoot this sport. Took 1400 shots last night for a 3-school triangular event. 5 hours of knees, butt, laying, and standing- and that was just me shooting the matches. Anyway, here's my contribution. Hack it up any way you want.
Exif: Canon 40D, ISO=3200, high iso option on, 1/320th, f2.8, manual mode

Good action, nice moment. The wall in the background looks pretty overexposed, soI'd recommend turning your ISO down to 1600 or even a 1250, if you can get away with it. This will help with the overall quality of the shot. Also might want to play around with cropping it tighter to put more emphasis on the action. Great shot for your fist time out.

I wanted to keep faces nice and bright, since I shoot these for a local paper. They like to see faces, and don't care as much about the same thing a person in the sport would. I'm sure faces sell papers, but realistic images sell prints to parents.
Thanks for the comments. I'll try to tone the exposure down in PP and see what I get. How close would you crop it?

I'd say bring it up from the bottom a little, in from the left until its almost touching the guy's foot, down from the top until most of the grey banner is gone and then in from the right however much you want depending on if you want the ref in the picture or not. Getting rid of a little extra space like this makes it look pretty nice, in my opinion. Hope this helps

I like the tighter crop. Looks pretty good for ISO3200 and 2.8. Nice action.

Hawk911, did you use any noise reduction software or is that how it looks at the high iso?

no reduction used other than in camera high-iso option turned on.
