a 50D will not be out for a VERY long time (probably about 18 months) since the 40D is very new.

OMG - All the new 'rumours' have already started

These are not rumours, they are wild speculation and at best, guesswork ;)

Canon have, so far, a regular 18 month update cycle on the xxxD and xxD range. 40D was out in Photokina 2007, so 50D at PMA 2009. 450D PMA 2008, 500D at Photokina 2009.

I'm not sure if this will stretch out if they start running low on new features to add...

People get so wrapped up in this stuff. Yes a new 5D would be nice but oh well, it isnt here yet.

Enjoy the proven and tested 5D. It's a beautiful camera.

I see a 45D before the end of the year. A better LCD and 12mp. Simple and cheap additions for Canon that will spark sales mid-model.

I think that is a possibility. Wouldnt it be nice to custom order the option we really want :) I want a drop in slide holder for shooting positives from time too time:cool:

Yep, the 40D might (hopefully) suffer the same fate as the Canon D60 which was quickly replaced in 12 months in order to keep up with the D100.
As for a 45D my wish list would be : VGA LCD, ISO6400 at least 15-21AF points and 12MP.

If Canon throws in micro AF adjustment, it will be really sweet.

It seems they wont be announcing anything for the 40D or 5D at this years PMA according to the site. :(

Dragos, if you aren't capable of taking stunning images with a 40D, you're far beyond the help its replacement might provide.

Actually I'm doing fine with my 20D thank you. However I would like an new generation camera to upgrade to. Is the 40D better ? Hell yes. Is is enough better to justify 1300 over my 20D? Hell no. SO there you have it. The 40D should have been the 30D. 3rd time's the charm for the WOW factor i suppose :(

PS: this was about gear, not skill. No need to get defensive. enjoy your 40D

If Canon update the 40D with a 45D or a 50D, it might make me upgrade from my 400D. If I've had my 400D for a year when they update it, I'll upgrade.

There is no Photokina in odd years.

Highly unlikely.. the 40D was just released a few months ago.. It should be at least a year and a half before the successor will be released.

This is just a personal opinion but I find the resolution of the 350d I have to be good enough. My reasons for wanting an upgrade would be the 6fps and the cross-type AF points mostly.

However, there does seem to be a mega-pixel war hotting up and Sony/Nikon are now providing very real 'headline' competition for Canon.

Things can only get better so I'm waiting for the 50D which is when I'll probably stick my 17-85 on the 350d as a more-or-less permanent fixture and likewise the 10-22 will be attached to the 50d as my favourite lens...

Heh, I was wondering how long it'd be before this one turned up.

I do wonder what they're going to do with the model name once they get to 90D which is.. what... 7, 8 years away if they keep upgrading at 18-month intervals...

I am expecting either a 7D/5D MK2 or a 45D around May/June.
This year i believe that Canon will announce something a few months before the 2008 Olympics. China is one of Canon biggest markets ... and the Olympics are a huge event!

May/June would suit me fine for a 5D replacement but I think it might be all dreaming... it'll probably be right near the end of the year. :p

The 2008 Olympics start August 8, 2008. I'm guessing, at the latest, they could announce something in May 2008, IF, they had product already lined up and ready to flood into the distribution channels.
However, this is probably highly unlikely.

They would have been in a much better position to release it along side the 450d at PMA 2008 this year as those two DSLR's would have complemented each other well (neither would have stolen the other's thunder).

The only body I could possibly foresee coming out around May 2008 might be a 45D if Canon really wanted to break ranks. This would be in direct competition to the new Sony & Pentax/Samsung models just released.
For a 45D released in May '08, at most, I'd expect a bump in MP up to maybe 12.2 (same sensor as XSi) or more likely, to 14MP. In addition, they'd add the live-view focusing mode the XSi has, but that's about it.

With regards to development, these features could easily be implemented between now & May if they've got a new sensor ready to go.

I don't know about May, but I FULLY expect a revised version of the 1DM3 (1DM3N?) to be announced sometime this year. In fact, I'd bet big money on it.

Reasoning:
1. There are significant public perception issues with the 1DM3 that need to be put in the past. The best way to do that is to reture the beleaguered model.
2. Canon's APS-H bodies have (also) been on an (approximate) 18 month cycle. The 1DM3 model was announced 1Q07, so an "N" variant 18 months after the 1DM3 introduction would put the announcement of the replacement sometime in the second half of this year (August is my guess).
3. I'm guessing Canon would like to issue a solid response to the Nikon D3, which has some Canon guys jumping ship. (I am thinking about it myself...)

Hehehe. You don't have money, you've got the British equivalent, which does me no good.

How about you can publicly ridicule me if there's no 1DM3 successor announced by the end of October?

I hope Canon will make the LCD screen swiveable so that the Live View will actually be useful.

If the did so ... i guess it will not look like a pro camera. It will look more like a semi pro cam, or more to pocket camera. i don't know, that my 2cents on swingable screen.

The D-series (10D-40D) aren't "pro" cameras...Canon certainly doesn't consider them that. It's not that you can't make money with them, but let's not kid ourselves. ;)

It seems kinda useful, but for some reason I don't like it.
