Great, nice to see a few folks in the general area. I'm sure more will spring up. Speaking of spring, I'm ready for it! Anyway, just interested in getting out more and shooting, looking for some cool place to go. Any tips/ideas or places to shoot in this area are appreciated!

I'm sitting directly between State College and Williamsport. Not too far away. It's too cold out! I just want to hibernate.

Not too much around my area interesting that I know of. Decided to get out yesterday and went to Bald Eagle State Park (Joseph Sayers Dam). I did a panorama quick before I left (flickr shrunk it): http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2300/2221362593_ab91bd88da_b.jpg

People were out there ice fishing - I was going to go out for some shots but I had my dog with me and didn't want her to break her legs.

I did go to the edge to get a self portrait on my way out, as a keepsake for the only time I will be there this winter when it's below freezing

Wow, that does look cold up there! I agree, it's been a bit chilly down here as well. All I've been shooting lately is indoor sports, including gymnastics and volleyball.

We went up to Williamsport last summer for the L.L.W.S. Great time up there. Also went to - what they call, the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon. Beautiful stuff up there!

However, having just moved back to PA from Arizona, the "real" Grand Canyon is just amazing ;)

Yeah, I usually go up to the "Grand Canyon" once a year at least. I never seem to be able to make it during the fall. Beautiful place (http://img245.imageshack.us/img245/8240/canyondy6.jpg), though! Unfortunately I always seem to be with people who just want to go to the lookout and be done, rather than walk the trails.

Maybe I'll head up there after the next major snowfall. Trails are probably closed then :(

Anyone happen to have a 70-200 2.8 IS? I'd really like to check one of those out, let alone on my 40D! Need to get a sense of the weight/size of that lens. I know I need something between 70 and 200, not sure if I want to get another prime. Debating the 85 /1.8 or the 135/2. Than again, the 2.8 might not be fast enough for indoor sports. Caught by the bug, what can I say...

If you ever come down to Lancaster, we can meet up and you can mount my 70 200 2.8L IS on your 40D and test it out.

To be honest, you won't want to use the 70 200 2.8L IS for indoor sports. You'll want a 1.4, 1.8 or 2.0 lens for indoor sports photography. With most indoor venues other than pro stadiums, to get shutter speeds of 1/250 minimium, I'm shooting at ISO 1600 or 3200. Your best bet is the 135 2.0L. You might find that the 85 won't offer enough reach.

Just found a good place to shoot on the west shore, Mechanicsburg. It's called Willow MIll park. Right off Rt.114 & Carlisle Pike. It's down by the creek, few benches, few small bridges, and a nice tree behind the pavilion where you can do family shots having them sit in the tree. Of course, it'll all look much nicer come spring time ;)

There's also the original Willow Mill structure there, it's on the right before you drive into the park. Nice wall textures and a really cool set of stairs on the fronts-side along the main road. Would make a great place to shoot.

Anyway, just wanted to throw that out there. Happy shooting!

Anyone a little more east. I live in Easton Pa. right on the Pa / NJ border. I did some Department Of Corrections training at SCI Camp Hill and in Elizabethtown so I know the area but it's about a 100 mile ride for me. Looking for something a little closer to home.

Just down the road from me! (Maybe a little too close sometimes.)

I do get out your way sometimes. Mostly Allentown/Bethlehem.

no, it sure didn't!

Mostly shooting indoors now, except for the cool abandoned train I found on Monday. Man was it cold out there.

Other than that just messing with a shoot through umbrella using the 580 and some PW's.

Hi Jason. Welcome! New to photography as well?

Yes, somewhat new. I've outgrown my point and shoot and superzoom cameras and got an Xsi. Picked up the 55-250 IS and 50 f/1.8 to go with.

If you like landscapes, the Gettysburg National Park is only 30-40 minutes south of Harrisbug on US 15. Also, during the tourist season, there are usually reenactors in the park or town.

I live in Cleona... my studio is in Annville... I shoot people... They make awesome subjects. ;)

As far as inanimate objects... really anything can make a good subject if you compose your photo right. ;) Just take a walk through the city with your camera.... you'll find a ton of shots!

hello everyone,
I am here in the coal region 45 miles north of harrisburg. Is there anyone around me? I am right off of ext 116 (I 81). I am pretty fresh on the buisness side of photog but I have been shooting for pleasure for as long as I could hold a cam. I wouldnt mind hooking up with anyone/someone that might be shooting in my area just too pick up some pointers.

Are there any kinds of photography groups in the Harrisburg area that get together for events and such? I work in pharmacy and I know there is a local pharmacy association, didn't know if there was the same kind of thing for photography.

There is a flickr meetup group (strangely enough, search for "Harrisburg flickr meetup group"), and I'm sure there are some camera clubs. I have no experience with the latter, though. All my experience is from hooking up with folks between flickr (Strobist and otherwise) and ModelMayhem, and there's no regularly scheduled meetings there.

bump.... ;)

Wanted to see if anyone knows of a local place to rent studio strobes. Going to be shooting dance teams and I know I'm going to need more light, but I'd rather not invest in buying new. I've got 2 genesis 400's - that should be good for the BG, but I don't see my 580ex be able to cover everything from the front.

Time to resurrect this thread. Any interest in a local meetup?

Looks like things are starting to warm up, finally. Hopefully it stays that way and I can get the studio up and running again. Once I get that going I'll host a get together if anyone is interested in trying some portrait lighting, share ideas, etc. And uh... who can get a model?

Also, looking for anyone that can be a standby this weekend (sat). I have an all-day shoot in Camp Hill (St John's Rd & Carlisle Pike) You know... just in case something breaks down! PW's, cam, etc. PM if you can. Thanks!

I've actually got some studio space too, although its small and being painted at the moment. :) Would love to get a couple of models together for a shootout. Saturdays tend to stink right now though, I'm guessing they do for anyone who's in the wedding biz as well.

Hey, I found a meetup group on meetup.com (http://www.meetup.com/lancasterphotographers/) They do things on Thursday night in Lancaster. They are having a Macro Workshop on June 3rd that I'll be attending. I'm also going to their next meetup this coming Thursday. I'll report back.

It may be a little far for some of you, but just thought I would put it out there.

Not a bad idea, but I'd personally rather have one more local to Harrisburg. We have a small flickr meetup group (http://www.flickr.com/groups/harrisburgmeetup/), but I'd almost favor setting up a small photo club, or something like that. The Strobist groups I've met with in Philly and Baltimore have some great core people, and I don't see why we can't put together a nice Central PA group, as well.

I just stumbled upon this thread. We're from the north of Lebanon near Indiantown Gap.

I think I read somewhere about the Hershey Camera club having meetups now and then...it's been awhile since I checked that out.

Here's some info on Ray's tunnel that I saw posted earlier in the thread:

Hey all. I live in York currently. I'm in Houston at the moment for work. I really wanted to get out and shoot some local stuff. It's been raining for most of the time or it's been too humid to do anything after the LONG workday. I went to Brazos bend state park last Saturday though. I got a few decent shots. I really want to start doing urban photography, just not sure where to go in the area.
