I visited the classified section this morning and came across this advert -

two more photographic prints for auction

http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=442922

I've always thought it strange that we permit links to E-Bay auctions on the board. If people want to sell gear here they can simply list it for sale. There is no fee, though the person is obliged to assess the market and put a price on their product. I guess they want the best of all worlds, getting exposure here and getting the highest price for their gear by auctioning it there. Personally, I think folks who hang out on these boards are smart enough to use E-Bay if they are interested in competing on auctions. They won't likely miss the gear if they're looking for it. So why are we offering free advertising to E-Bay users?

That said, I find this listing particularly absurd. Perhaps Tony the Pony is a beloved member of POTN and members are longing to learn about his latest photo for sale. Regardless, I don't understand the logic in using the POTN classified board to sell photo prints. Am I missing something here? If Tony had listed the prints for sale on POTN I imagine he'd get complaints. So why is a link to an E-Bay auctions acceptable?

If Tony wants to share his work with all of us he can post photos on the Nature and Animals board. If he wants to sell his photos on E-Bay, have at it. But I don't like seeing this kind of listing on the classified board.

My rant is finished... :evil:

It's explicitly permissable to post links to eBay auctions in the For Sale section. It's up to you about wether or not to bid.

PLACING AN AD IN MARKETPLACE
Include your country of residence in the title, even if you are willing to sell outside that area. Within the post, please provide an indication of where you live.
Specify the currency you are selling in.
Post pictures, where applicable, in the original post.
Please list any extras or accessories you will include in the transaction.
State the acceptable method(s) of payment.
Please state if shipping/insurance is included in the price. Also state the method of shipping you are proposing.
Mark SOLD by locking the thread: see http://photography-on-the.net/forum/...d.php?t=179825
All Thread titles should include one or more of the following abbreviations in the TITLE:

FS = For Sale
FA = for Auction (it is permissible to advertise your ebay /auctions, but they MUST contain "FA" in the title)
FT = For trade
WTB = Want to buy (when your looking to buy something.)

If you sell only to certain continent, country or trade area, please state that in title, e.g.:
For Sale (UK) Canon EF-S 17-85mm
For Sale (US) Canon EF-S 17-85mm
For Sale Canon EF-S 17-85mm (EU)
It is always helpful to your fellow members to have your actual location listed either in the thread, or in your member profile.
DOUBLE-CHECK THAT ALL FACTS AND PRICES ARE CORRECT, AND THAT YOU HAVE PROVIDED PHOTOS AND ALL RELEVANT INFO. MAKE ALSO SURE THAT YOUR EMAIL IS WORKING AND THAT IT IS ENABLED IN FORUM'S USER CONTROL PANEL.

To automatically follow replies, use our "subscription" feature: either set it on in your User CP before posting or use thread tools -> subscribe thread after posting.

And his thread title says clearly "for auction"

so you can just move on to the next ad and never give it another thought
