View Full Version : Glamour Forum Limitations

I occasionally stop by the different photo forums, including this one. Last night I tried to post a comment and was unable to do so. I visited this area because I vaguely remember a thread about limitations on posting to that forum. I discovered that until I have 500 posts I am unable to do so. You see, although I've been a member for almost three years I have less than a hundred posts.
So what does the 500 post requirement mean? Clearly the moderators don't want folks to simply drop in and make lascivious comments about naked women. And what is magical about 500? Got me?
I don't post very often simply because I'm not inclined to participate in idle chats about anything, including photography. I could easily build up my post total by making inconsequential, inane comments all over the site. Since I have no intention of doing so, I guess the folks on the Glamour Forum will have to do without my observations about their technique. That is hardly a loss for them or me. I do think the 500 post requirement is a bit silly however. Wouldn't time spent as a member be an equally useful way of limiting lustful newbies?

If you check, we have two criteria, both time and post count. This is to discourage casual posters. It's unfortunate that low-total members of long standing are also excluded. But we consider the combination a necessary curb on the voyeurs who were a serious problem prior to imposing the restrictions.

Yes Jon. I still don't know how post total is essential to your laudable goal. Why not simply use the time of membership? Do you expect folks to sign up just so they can return and make lewd comments six months later?

No disrespect, but sometime just asking mod with some explanation works ;) That's how I did it.

There is another way to be allowed early entry.
Provide some samples of your work(G&N) to the powers that be and you can perhaps be granted a boone.

Hi Andy - I'm sorry if my tone seems in any way confrontational. That wasn't my intention. I understand the purpose of the requirements for that board and have no problem with the moderators efforts to manage the board. I simply have a question about the particular criteria being used to do so. I certainly find no disrespect in your comment. It would be nice if the moderators concluded in response to my question to change the criteria but my world won't come to an end if they don't. Things always work out in the end.

I appreciate the suggestion but I'm more inclined to shoot kids than voluptuous models. :D
I intended to respond to a request for comments by making a simple suggestion about how this particular photographer might improve the image he'd presented. They'll do fine without my comment. I simply was interested in the rationale for the particular criteria being used to limit comments.

You can get from this site what you put back into it.
Don't post "inane comments". Don't post inconsequential matter. Why not post something useful and contribute? You can then be rewarded with access to the G&N section. Earn the right with pride.
Just because you signed up 3 years ago doesn't mean anything. Sure there are people with 6 months of crap posts that can do as they please here. We know who they are. Contribute and become a valued member. PM some G&N shots of your own to a mod and politely ask for an exception perhaps?
Ask not, what you forum can do for you...but what you can do for your forum.

I want to follow this thread along as well, because I've thought similar. I usually think out my posts instead of just blindly replying, so my post count goes up slowly. I don't even know how many I've made, or how long I've been a member, but have seen the occasional post that I'd have constructive comments to add, but am restricted from doing so.
Oh well, so I stick with the People forum!
I did find it odd... I can understand why, but do not understand the specific quantitative numbers!

But his point is he's NOT and G&N photog. He was simply wanting to post a reply / comment / compliment and cant do it. So I'm sure he could find someone to put on a bathing suit and take some artistic pics, but that's IMO as bad as posting "inane comments". It's getting around the system. There have been a few pics in the G&N that I was going to post on, they were just WOW shots, there are a lot of them in that section, but these just BAM were great, but of course I hit the reply button and it got denied. I think went and found about the posting shrugged my shoulder and moved on. I'm new, I can understand not being allowed to take part in that forum, even on the commenting side, but it does seem kinda strange that more time doesnt somehow take away some of the post requirements.
I can see the admins points, and I can see the OP's points. Just seems like there should be maybe a 3rd way to be able to partake of that forum..
But, again, I understand, and accept any rules that they make. It's their forums, they can do with it as they please :).

I know he's not a G&N shooter. It still stands.
The 3rd way was clearly explained.

If you have a valid comment, you can always PM it to the originating poster.

I think the existing rule isn't 100% effective, though it does provide a stumbling block for most miscreants. I am quite surprised at the OP - though he has been a long time member here, has he not seen the problems in the G&N forum that necessitated this rule? Since its implementation, the G&N forum has become more civilized.
To OP, sorry you can't post there yet. I'm sure you'll be able to, if you ask the moderators.
In a civilized manner.

I appreciate the sentiment. I've been very active on a few sites over the years but despite having had some lovely exchanges with a few very nice people along the way, meetings in cyberspace have seldom been satisfying to me over the long run. Of course, I'm the person who never accepts invitations to a friend's birthday celebrations for the simple reason I don't enjoy making small talk. He's a good enough friend that he continues to extend the invitations and remains willing to hang out with me from time to time, despite the fact I don't attend his soirees. I enjoy personal exchanges with people in my life.
Chatting about gear can be fun once in a while. Commenting on photos can be enjoyable. But a regular diet of either holds little appeal for me. I do much more reading on this site than commenting. I also enjoy looking at photos. I seldom comment, largely out of respect for the photographer and his or her journey of discovery. It is a rare person who can offer a comment that is meaningful. I don't pretend to be such an accomplished photographer that I feel my comment is essential to another person's development.
I also enjoy checking the classified section, though as you can see from my signature line I'm not seriously in need of additional gear. The 626 posts I accumulated over three years at Fred Miranda are primarily the result of shopping for what you see in my kit. Although I've bought a few things on this board, I won't likely repeat my FM buying spree.
I guess the long and short of it is I won't likely give to this site what you suggest is required to realize the full benefits of "membership." I'm comfortable with that. In fact, this thread has helped me to get clear on what I want from this site. Your comments are much appreciated. Thanks.

You've been here 5 months (Sept. 2007) and still have almost 5x the posts of OP. You can only, as others have noted. It sounds like you're maximizing the learning experience for all your posts, as well as the ones you thought about making.

RE: POTN's G&N Access policies.
Access policies to the POTN Glamor and Nude Forum can be found at the top of the G&N forum itself in a sticky thread labeled
"GLAMOR FORUM RULES" or by clicking HERE (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showpost.php?p=707294&postcount=1)
POTN has enacted a restricted access policy for the G&N forum due to a number of factors including mature content and forum etiquette to name a few.
Since the restrictions have been instituted, these policies now in place have served POTN very well. The POTN G&N forum has grown to be respected for the mature behavior of it's participants. POTN's policies and restrictions have helped the G&N forum attract the interest and posts of some very high profile and well respected professionals in the field, as well as serve to be a valuable resource for those dedicated to learning this genre of photography.
It is with these benefits in mind that at this time, and for the foreseeable future, POTN will not consider opening any of the existing policies for further discussion.
Any inquiries regarding the policies of the G&N forum should be addressed directly to the Moderators of the forum via PM. Public Threads addressing these policies will be closed or removed.
