View Full Version : Found a small scratch on my brand new Rebel

Ok, I know this is really picky, but after spending $1000 on a camera, it sucks to find little small scratches. I found a tiny little scratch on the plastic of the camera (does not affect photo quality at all) right above the viewfinder. Since I bought this camera (last night), I've been VERY careful with it. So, I know the scratch wasn't caused by the way I handled the camera.

Is it worth taking the time to return it for a new one (purchased it at Best Buy) or do all Cameras eventually get nicks and small scratches on them with regular use?

Thanks in advance

You know it's there. It bothers you. It won't go away. You'd rather make your own nicks and scratches. Exchange it, you'll feel better.

I would take it back.
In fact, I have for the same thing.

Thanks for the advice guys. I just got back with a brand new Rebel. But, now it seems I have a few more issues :(

When I took the body out of the box and out of the bubble wrap, there was an obvious rattling sound that wasn't in the old one. Now, so far as I can tell, it doesn't affect the picture, but even with the battery, CF card, and lens all in place, if I shake it even slightly, I can hear something rattling inside. No idea what it is.

What could this be? Worth taking it back over or is this something that's common in these cameras?

Thanks in advance

Alternatively ask for a substantial reduction in price.

EDIT: too late....

It can be 2 things. One the flash is a little loose and can possibly rattle or it is the internal "gyro" that detect when the camera is held in portrait mode.

Well, even if I hold the flash in place with my hand, it still rattles quite a bit.

You could go back and exchange it but there is this "gyro" inside that will rattle a little when You turn the camera around.

But he said he didn't hear it in the first Digital Rebel he bought (the one with the scratches).

If I was you, I would take it back and let them hear it at Best Buy. There's no point in ignoring something you hear in a brand new product, only to find out months later that it affects the camera's usage and picture quality. Take it back now while you can.

Take it back to BestBuy, and if you are paying that much for the D-Rebel kit, I'd get a full refund and go to a local camera shop.

Not only will they respect you more, but you could try it out in the store before you buy it. Plus you'd be helping out the local camera shop and not a we don't care chain like BestBuy.

Or save a few hundred and get your Camera from one of the NYC shops in a few weeks when they open again :P

I think you are just having a string of bad luck. Have it replaced again and make sure everyhhing works fine before you take it out of the store, that way you don't need to go backif there is another problem.

Cheers

Luckily, it ended up being the flash brackets after all. I need to find a small screwdriver to tighten 'em up a bit I guess. Camera seems to be fine though. If I open the flash, hold the brackets, and shake the camera a little, it's absolutely silent. Probably just the flash brackets after all.

Thanks for the heads up guys!

I had the same problem and discovered that it was the little silver brackets that pop up with the flash. I fixed the issue with a small washer I rigged up.
