I just received the Kalt hand strap from B&H. However, I was disappointed to find out that the bottom plate causes my camera (40D) to tip forward and rest on the lens whenever I put it down. Can someone who has the Hakuba grip (or opteka, etc.) tell me if it does the same thing?

I don't have those but I have a similar one and had the same problem. I took the plate off and connected the strap to one end to the eyelet at the top of the camera and the other end to the eyelet in the base of the grip. No more problems.

Thanks, Popper. Are speaking about the eyelet on the battery grip or are you saying that you attach both ends of the hand strap to the same eyelet at the top of the camera?
I am asking because I don't use a battery grip.
Also, can anyone else weigh in on whether the Hakuba or other brands of hand strap cause this tipping? TIA

Yes the Hakuba will cause the same tip.
The Hakuba and the rest of the similar hand-strap setups seem to use the exact same mounting. They tip because the bottom is not a plate. It is a round knob that screws into the tripod mount and doesn't have enough platform for the body to sit on. The more expensive set-ups mount with a Allen screw recessed in a quick release plate.

I got the Noink strap for the 1D and now use it on the 40D with grip. They all tilt forward, especially with a 300mm lens on. ;)

two different eyelets... if I am looking at the back of my camera there is one on top and then one on the bottom, both on the right side... at least that's how it is on my gripped XT... I'm not sure if the 40D is the same.

Thanks all. Looks like I'll need to find another solution for my clumsiness.

I use the hakuba grip all the time. In my opinion; the only time this would be a problem is if you want to set the camera down on a rock or table to take a self portrait.
Are you saying you find this to be a 'problem' when you just set the camera down?
Just curious..

I'm just saying it would be my preference that it did not tip forward and rest on the lens, even if I just set it down. I know it's probably not putting any undue strain on the joints of the lens or on the mount - I'd just feel better if it didn't tip.
BTW, i hadn't considered the self-portrait implications. Thanks for that.

Yes.. that is the drawback to using a hand grip. Consider that you can attach a plate from your tripod and put it onto your tripod whilst not using the camera.. Tho, some will warn you that it can be dangerous to store you camera on a tripod. Danger is everywhere :|
I usually set my camera with lens on the top of my camera back pack.. doesn't matter what is on the bottom.
