Hello,

I am looking for some advice on what i need to fit on the front of my new Tokina AF 12-24mm f/4 PRO DX Lens. I guess I need some sort of filter that screws onto the front of the lens.

Can anyone help.

P.S. I also need one for my canon 50mm f1.8

You ant to make sure that any filters you use are good quality and multicoated to control reflections and flare. I use B+W MRC UV filters on all my lenses and also have B+W MRC circular polarizers for them. Other reliable brand/models are the Hoya Pro 1 and Heliopan SH-PMC. Just be forewarned, good filters, like good lenses, aren't cheap. There's a Protective Filter FAQ here (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=368177) in the Lens Forum.

Hi,

Who told you that you need a filter? The sales guy at the store where you bought the lens?

Please read the FAQ at that link thoroughly. It's well balanced with both sides of this long-standing argument.

You actually don't need a "protection" filter at all... And there are some reasons to not use one. But if you feel you must, you really do need to go for top quality, as Jon states.

Ill second the use of B+W MRC F-Pro UV Haze Filters. I have one on all my lenses.

I have never used any "protective" filters, and all my old lenses (as well as my newer ones) have pristine glass in them.

I do use a properly designed (for each individual lens) rigid lens hood (NOT a flexible rubber one) on each and every lens that is out of my bag.

As has been said above, if you insist on lining a salesman's pockets (filters make them a huge margin), get the best you can find so that they won't ruin your images with flare, etc.

a uv/haze filter is priceless when doing close-ups of little kids who like nothing more than to jump up & try to grab the camera!!
