Today, I noticed a crack on my G3 lens.

i) straight crack from 5 to 7 o'clock, about 3mm above the edge at 6 o'clock
ii) curved crack from 7 to 9 o'clock, about2mm inside the curved edge.

Can the lens be changed? how much is the cost?

or do i need to get the whole camera changed?

Usually, things like that are more expensive to replace than the camera is worth. It might be time to look at a new G6! :)

I agree with Scott. Now does it interfere with pictures? If not, then don't worry about it and get maximum mileage out of your G3. BTW, do you know how it got cracked?

Is it still under warranty? Did you get a store extended warranty? If you can use one or the other for a replacement, maybe you can wangle a G6 as a replacement.

hi guys,

just wanted to give you an update on status of my G3 lens crack. Last week i sent my G3 to Canon Factory Service Ctr in Illinois. Today, I called them and spoke to one of the techs there. He faxed me the repair invoice right away.

They will replace the lens and replace the LCD (which has many dead pixels). cost $180.00 (their costs start at $180 and go upward from there. So $180 is the minimum charge).

My G3 is still under extended 1 year warranty from the Credit card I used to purchase the G3. Will let you know if they (credit card co.) will pay or not. In any case, I have to get it repaired to use it. (I bought G3 from onecall last year for $730).

Wish me luck. :(

:?: Last year the G5 was coming out for $799. At the same time G3 cameras if you could find one were going for about $550. I would stay away from that store that charged you $730 for a G3.

no ... I bought G3 in 1/04 when it was for $730.

here is update on my G3:

10.4.04: sent to Canon Factory service Illinois by Priority Mail.
10.7.04: received by canon
10.12.04: received Fax from canon on repair estimate. ($180 is the minimum starting service charge for G3).
10.14.04: paid over Tel by credit card $180 and requested service ASAP.
10.18.04: G3 sent by Canon by Fedex 2nd day.
10.20.04: received G3 today.

my preliminary testing on repaired G3 is ok.

Now, I have to fight the insurance company regarding payment for this service (extended coverage from the credit card).

DV, The G3 was selling for about $550 in July of 03. Don't dwell on it though. My first digital camera was a Kodak DC4800 that I paid $800 full price for. 6 months later it was going for $450. A lesson learned. Never buy a new model of anything when it first comes out.
