Anyone have any thoughts comparing the Metz 54-mz-4c flash to the Canon 550ex? I am going to sell my old 380ez back-up and am trying to decide on which flash to replace it with. I already own a 550ex...any real world comparisons between the metz and the 550ex?

We don't hear much about the Metz on this forum I have to say..

If you do not get a decent response here you may want to check the Canon forum @ Fredmiranda.com

I know there is a dedicated bunch of Metz-Canon shooters there that swear by it and won't touch a 550. (particularly 1D shooters)

What Body are you using?.. I think this may have some impact on the decision.

Hope this helps :)

I called to get a price on the 550ex from one of my local camera shop (not a Ritz!). The guy asked what kind of camera I had. I told him I had a 10D. He told me not to go near the 550ex and that the Metz-54 was the way to go. He said the 550 gave incredibly INCONSISTENT results--something I've heard a lot about on this forum.

Then I went to the place I bought my 10D from (a smaller shop, but more pro-oriented and cheaper). The woman there had a 550ex in stock but when she heard I had a 10D she wouldn't sell it to me! She said I would not be satisfied.

In the end, I still have no external flash. I hadn't been on the forum much at the time, and while I was convinced the 550ex was the wrong way to go, I still am not sure about the MZ-54.

This helps, though--thatnks for the link to the metz users.

You may also check www.robgalbraith.com. There are many Metz users and some issues on 20D.

Well, I may give Metz a try myself.
