Digital Rebel 7 Point Autofocus problem

I am borrowing my Father-in-laws digital rebel for a few days and I have noticed that no matter what I try and focus on, the only red focus dot that lights up is the one on the right side of the frame. I can never focus on anything on the left side of the frame ever.
Is there a setting some where that I can change something, or is this an indication that there is something wrong with the camera? I have tried both the kit lens and a Canon 75-300mm lens as well with the same results.
