Hello to everyone out there,
I'm new to this forum but will be visiting it frrequently. Lots of interesting thresds going on.
I have a question for you. Does anyone know who makes this Octo softbox (see phots below)? I saw it attached to an Alien Bees head in a studio in a mall and can't figure out who it's by. Can anyone help me?

That's AlienBee's new 56" Moon Unit isn't it?

Thanks RLee,
That's what I thought. I have a 56" moon octo softbox, but you can only attach it to their ringflash. The octo in these photos is attached to a B1600 unit using a Photoflex speed ring. Still can't tell who makes this octo softbox. Help someone!
Thanks

I am about 99% sure all softbox holes are spaced the same its just the mounting ring thats different. So as long as it will mount to your strobe any softbox will fit. Someone correct me if I am wrong

This same setup is at the local mall to photograph kids.

Hey Daniel & Jazypanda,
Daniel, what you said about the softbox fitting a speed ring is partially true. But you forgot about the "wands" that support the box. Here's my delima. As Jazypanda noted, I saw this setup in a local mall where they photograph kids. I bought an Alien Bees 1600 flash recently and a 56" moon octo softbox. I also bought a photoflex speedring for the Alie Bees 1600 head (that's what's on the unit I saw). The problem is the wands are too short, thus the octo box can't take shape. It falls apart. I called Paul C. Buff, Inc. and they told me that the moon octo softboxws is designed for their ring flash units, which have a totally different mounting ring (much wider). Also, the 56' moon doesn't look like this octo softbox. The moon doesn't have the black trim work where the strobe mounts to the box. Sooooo, that octo box is not an Alien Bees moon. Thanks for trying guys, but I still want to know what it is.
Oh, by the way, no one that worked at this studio knew who makes this octo box . Or, they just ain't sayin'.
Once again, HELP!!

It's not the moon unit. Looked on their website and the moon unit can only be used with their ringlights.http://www.alienbees.com/mu56.html

I will agree. I went to the mall last night and saw the exact same thing. I played with it looking for a name brand until someone came by to ask if I needed help. He did not know what the gear was either.
Really I think they just turn the power up on the AB1600 and left this huge Octabox defuse all the light evenly over the subject(s).

I would be interested to find this out myself.

Now do you believe me? No one seems to know what octo softbox this is. Not even the photographers who work at the mall studio. I went to the B&H website and looked at every octo box they hAVE AND DID NOT SEE ONE THAT LOOKS LIKE THIS ONE. I guess I'll have to purchase their ring light, but I wanted more power from the flash. Last call. Does anyone out there know who makes this octo softbox?

It could be a modified 56" MU from alienbees. The way the black outer corners look reminds me of the one on my 30" MU.
I also googled octobox in google's image search and not nothing that looks close!

Hey Majs,
What's an MU? I didn't see anything in their catologue with that designation. I also didn't see anything in 56".

I say just go and ask to look at it or ask a worker. Maybe buy a frame while you're there.

Hey,
Been there, done that. The people that work there don't know who it's by. Their corporate headquarters set up the studio with this lighting.
And, it's been stated several times that it's not an MU (moon unit). I guess no one knows what it is on this forum. Thanks anyway folks. Enough is enough:).

Well, here's the word I got from Paul C. Buff himself (I posted the photos with Gligon's permission on Paul's forum): "Looks like someone modified a Moon Unit to fit on an AB, with the silver inside and a lot of special fabrication."
So, it looks like it is a Moon Unit after all.

Why? Do any of you think it will be any better than an normal softbox?
