$69 for a 1GB Sandisk Extreme? I'd like to know where you've seen them for such a price.

I've seen lesser Sandisk 1 GB CF cards for that price. But never an Extreme. Not even close.

Wow.. It doesn't seem that long ago people were pointing out that NewEgg had 128 Meg CF cards for under 100 bucks :)

Memory has dropped as fast as HD prices dropped once they hit the 20gb mark. I remember paying 2x more for a 128 MB SD card than I paid for my 512 MB SD card.

I love it. BTW, I still like the Lexar better, but that is only personal preference. Everyone should buy at least one so they can get the free recovery software. It has worked every time for me... again, FREE.

Extreme is being replaced by Extreme III. They will be even faster, and will probably be higher priced.

Ultra II is being changed, too. That is a little different. You might want to check here:

I have picked up 2 scandisk ultra 11 with 65x speed for UK £59.95 each plus £5.95 P&P fromE-bay, I also got a couple of lexar 1g 80xprofessional CF cards for £80 each and they all arrived within 2weeks from the US. Prices even on e-bay are dropping.

NOT 4X...40X....69.95 minus 30 rebate = 39.95

I found the link on DPREVIEW, the sale was only for a few days. I ordered the card around 16 September. They were offering a $30 rebate for purchases made before 30 September. Just mailed in the rebate. I think we will see better deals now that even faster and larger cards are available. This is a 40X card though, I felt very lucky to get it at that price (39.95 after rebate). :D

That's OK, I paid $98 for my REGULAR 512MB SanDisk just 5 months ago...

My 2GB Sandisk Ultra II cards set me back about $165/each, but I find that they hold shadow detail slightly better than do Lexar cards, and allow for a smoother, more "buttery" bokah than do the 40x Kingston CF cards. (The old 4x Kingston was perhaps the most beautifully bokah-enhancing CF card of all time. But this card was discontinued a while back, and upon learning that Kingston had already done its last production run of the 4x card, professional portrait photographers pretty much bought up whatever remaining stock was out there.)

Although the Sandisk Extreme is similar to the Ultra II, it tends to give a greenish-yellow cast to skin tones, not unlike late 1970s vintage Fujichrome. However, if I'm not photographing people, it's a wonderful card; it gives me about an extra 2/3 stop before losing highlight detail, and is the only CF card capable of rivaling the Transcend 80x 1GB for virtually eliminating purple fringing, when photographing tree branches against a bright sky. (I hope the recently announced Sandisk Extreme III is as good.)

Was this part a joke? And if not, where did you find 2GB Ultra II Cards for $165? I would love to know.

Haha

Pfft... fools... I'm gonna hold out for 2 more years. Then it's gonna be 3 ultra for a dollar... :P

No, actually the $165 for 2GB Ultra II part was more or less true. I bought one last month, from http://www.buy.com, for $160.99 (plus $5.09, s/h). No mail in rebate or anything like that. Anyway, the card was back ordered for about 2 weeks, but it did eventually ship. I think buy.com has bumped the price up to $186.99, although now there's a $25 mail in rebate, so the final cost has only gone up by about a buck.

The day before buy.com sent out my card, I figured it was never going to be in stock, and would forever exist solely in back ordered limbo land, so I went and ordered a 2GB Sandisk Ultra II from http://www.caplinktech.com, about whom I knew nothing, but their rating at http://www.resellerratings.com/seller2668.html was quite good, and they had the card for $176 (but with free shipping). I ordered from them in the evening, got shipping confirmation (with tracking number) the next morning, and the card arrive 3 days later. I think they still have the card in stock, same price as I paid, still with free shipping.

Want to hear something wierd? Although they'll sell you a 2GB Ultra II for $176, their price for the "regular" Sandisk 2GB card - you know, the slower version - is $244. In my ignorance, I can't think of a reason to spend more money for the slower card.

Hi all!

Just checked newegg.com and the SanDisk UtraII 1GB is now $88.00. Dang it, I just paid $109 for it just two weeks ago! Anyhow, I might wait a couple more days and get another one as a backup.

With image files bordering the 10 MB mark, (if you shoot in RAW with a small/fine JPG) a 1 GB card only gets you about 100 shots. It seems like a 2 GB card would make more sense, for only about $50-80 more. Why are the 1 GB cards so popular? Why not spend the little extra money and get double the capacity and the peace-of-mind? Am I missing something here?

I ordered the Sandisk Ultra II last week thinking that the promised price drop wouldn't be reflected in store prices up here for quite a while.
Well, sure enough I checked the price yesterday, and the same card is now 10% cheaper

shiningstardv, not everybody is shooting Raw

Why are the 1 GB cards so popular?
They're popular because a whole lot of people shoot high quality JPG with 4-6 MP cameras. So they can get... I don't know... maybe 300 shots per card?

Bear in mind, many of these people used to run through 2 rolls of 35mm film per year (1 roll at Christmas, another roll during the summer, on vacation), so even though they shoot a lot more with digital, they see a 1 GB card as representing 8-12 rolls of film. And they perceive that as really a lot of pictures.

Now, if someone shoots RAW, with an 8 or 10 MP digital camera, and thinks nothing of taking a few hundred photos in the course of a moderately busy morning, I agree that a 1 GB card might be a little limiting. I, myself, prefer cards of 2 GB and up. But you and I may not represent as large a potential market as do our non-photography minded friends and relatives. (And let me emphasize that I'm not belittling these people in any way.)

Finally, many people have this idea that it's better to use four 1 GB cards, rather than one 4 GB card, because if the card goes bad, one would only be out 25% of the day's shooting, and not 100%.

Others would maintain that this conveniently ignores the fact that with 4 cards, there is several times the probability of at least one going bad, than there would be with a single card. It ignores the fact that the smaller capacity cards mean much more removing and inserting of cards - and this is where cards get dropped in sand or mud, and where the little pin contacts in the camera get bent (potentially rendering the camera out of commission pending repair). And it ignores the fact that sometimes it's a disruption to have to swap cards, even if swapping cards does only take a few seconds.

But there you have it - some possible reasons why 1 GB seems to be something of a "sweet spot," in the current CF card marketplace.

Oh, I would add that I sometimes have to shoot a few pictures for use on an eBay auction. If I'm going to be taking 4 shots of an item for eBay use, and probably only wind up using one of the pictures anyway, I'll likely shoot JPG, and be perfectly satisfied with an old 128 MB card. Similarly, if I'm going to stop by Walmart and print out a 4x6" picture on the machine there (a whopping 39 cent expenditure), I'd just as soon copy the image file over to one of my cheap, small capacity cards, as put it on a 2 GB Ultra II. I mean, why not? The card reader is permanently plugged into my computer, and it's quicker to copy a file or two onto a CF card, than it is to burn them onto a CD-R.

Ahh, I see there are some factors I was over-looking. Thanks for putting me back in check.

Meanwhile, I search for a good deal on a fast (Ultra II or Lexar 80X) 2GB card...

I also just happened to spot that the San Disk is now $88.00 at NewEgg.
Of course, the FedEX shipping, which was $1.99 yesterday, is $3.99 today.

Sounds like a plan. I prefer Sandisk as well, but if there was a really great deal on a Lexar it would be hard for me to pass up. I'll let you know if I find anything. So far the cheapest I have seen for 2GB Ultra II is about $186 (link is posted above in this thread I think). But I'm still looking...

Funny thing. I just got my 1GB Sandisk UltraII, and it's not noticably faster than my Lexar 12x on the 20D.
However, that's not really a bad thing, as both are BLAZINGLY fast on this camera.
