Liked my S3 a lot. LCD screen cracked and wondering if should repair or upgrade to S5. Been researching and now even more confused. Like the idea on LCD screen, but read that performance on S3 was better. Someting about faster shoots or focus. My question is what are the advantages of S3 VS S5. Any advice appreciated, thanks.

I don't have the S5 either. I have the S2. I believe for me, the hot shoe on the S5 would be the single most important improvement.

Here (http://www.s3users.com/forum/showthread.php?t=6520) is a link to the thread from Popeye who replaced his screen because of a crack. He gives detailed instructions on how to do it. It cost him $30.00

S3 is a nice camera but if I had the chance I would get the S5. I loved my S3 but the S5 has important features IMO to have. Given I already have a flash so I wouldn't have to spend money on one but I'd used that a lot. I honestly like the size better and screen does make a difference. Also, while I know my S3 did some great shots, using the S5 in store, it didn't do too bad as I thought my S3 would at higher ISO levels.

Besides the S5 is getting lower and lower in cost.

I own an S5 and enjoy using it, however, I feel that there is WAY too much noise even at ISO 100. I also own a SD 800IS, which produces much cleaner images in the same light. I believe the difference is due to Canon using the same small 1/2.5" CCD on both cameras and then squeezing in another 0.9mp on the S5, thus causing each individual pixel to get less light. Less light = more interpolation = more noise.

Now the S3 uses the same size chip but with much less pixels so in my opinion, it has the capability to produced images of much less noise. If you aren't printing poster-size prints, I'd say fix your S3 and save your money for a dSLR!!

if the clean-up of this is $30, I say fix the screen and save for the next camera. If the cost to fix is more (significantly), I say ...ask someone else :D

owned both. if you absolutely do not care about low-light performance, they're pretty much the same. s3 has slightly better pic quality but it's not super noticable (but you do). s3's built quality is better. with bounced flash however s5 will get nicer pics than s3 in indoors situations.

I bought my S3 exactly a year ago yesterday. I really wanted to buy an XTi at the time, but the budget wouldn't allow it. The S3 is a great camera to be sure, but it was never what I wanted and was always meant as a means to an end. I'm glad I didn't get the XTi last year now, because it gave me more time to research what I really wanted and gave Canon time to bring out the 40D, which I bought last week. :D

The S3 still has its place, so I won't get rid of it, but it's been moved to second string.

Thanks for that! My screen got busted and I had just resorted myself to using the viewfinder.
