I have put this file in every area of the CF card and the camera does not see it. I called Canon and they will not give any advise over the phone, they say I have to go to the service center. Has anybody else encountered this.

First, did you format the card?
Second, did you extract the file? The file that you d/l from Canon has to be extracted. Then, copy the extracted file to your cf card. Then make sure you follow the instructions EXACTLY. One thing that might be easy to miss is to make sure the camera is in "P" mode.
I updated here this morning with no problems.

I formatted the card both Canon and sandisk. Camera is in P mode. I downloaded the file ( from the site three times to make sure) I dragged and droped it I copied it directly to the Card. I put it in three different folders and it cant see the file on the card.

Did you run (on the PC) the file that you downloaded, or did you just copy the exact file you downloaded onto the CF card? You need to extract the actual firmware upgrade from the eos20d104.exe or eos20d104.hqx which Canon bundled it in before the camera will recognize it. The extracted file is 20D00104.FIR.

I opened it ( extracted it)

The file can't be in any folder. If it is, the camera won't see it.
After I formatted my card, there was an empty "Canon" folder still on it. I deleted that folder, the copied the extracted firmware file to the cf card.
Make sure your file is NOT inside a folder on your card.
Keep us posted.

First, double-click the downloaded file, while it is still on your computer. The resultant file it creates is what you will put on your CF.

DO NOT put it in ~any~ folder. Otherwise, the camera won't see it.

Thanks Jack that was it. They said to put it in main folder, that confused me.

You're welcome.
Glad you're up and running. :)
