Hopefully this is the right forum for these questions. My 20D is on the way and I was just curious if there is a hard plastic type of LCD cover available for this body like the Nikon D70.
My other questions are obviously rookie questions but that's what this place is for right?
I'm pretty set on a purchase of a Tamron 28-75 for my 20D and I'd like to get a UV filter/lens protector. When looking at filters and lens hoods, how do you know what size to look for? Is there a certain number that tells you the diameter you need for filters or hoods?
Also, is here any reason to need a card reader that also writes back to the card? I want to get a firewire reader for CF cards but none of the firewire versions I've seen also write to the cards. But I can't think of a reason why I'd need that. If I archive anything or transport for printing I'll probably use CDs.
Thanks for any advice you may have for me. Have a great day.

If you looking for a hoodman product for your LCD, i'd say there is no need at all. LCD replacement screen cost around the same as a protector, and you can find them even cheaper on ebay.
filter size will be stated on actual lens and box it comes with.
i don't see the need to transfer any images back to card, not usually anyway.

Are you looking for something like this (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00007GWC6/qid=1096911540/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1_etk-electronics/104-8494766-7983926?v=glance&s=photo&n=172282)
I believe all card readers write back to the card.

I'm looking for something more custom. The one I saw on the D70 was made for that. It was a rigid plastic and snapped over the LCD display.

Not too sure about attaching anything to my new camera with glue.
I once attached a flash accessory with velcro, hardly ever used it and even when I had taken it off the glue left a sticky patch. I wouldn't want a sticky patch next to my nose when looking through the viewfinder.

No need to worry about that Mark, there will be no residue. Have to admit that I never used such a thing, just heard about it.

As far as the filter and hood questions...
You buy filters (and hoods) based on the diameter of the lens ring. On the Tamron 28-75mm I believe it is 67mm. However, I know the Tamron comes with a lens hood, so if you were looking at buying one for that lens, you've already got one!

Jeff, I just bought the Tamron 28 to 75 F 2.8 and love it, I also have a Sigma 28 to 105 F 2.8-4 and had it rechipped and it works really good, the Tamron has a slight edge on sharpness. The Tamron comes with a a hood.
As far as the lcd screen, they sell protective plactic overlay, very thin, no glue, it operates like Christmas window displays, they just adhere to it and you can remove it and replace it and hoodman sells it.

Hey Phil,
I was wondering if it wasn't too much trouble, would you mind taking a few pictures of your 20D with the Tamron 28-75mm lens and LENS HOOD on it? I'm interested to see what it looks like, because that's the combo I will be buying shortly. If you can't post it anywhere on the web, then you could email the pics to me: scottsil [@] mac.com (remove the [ ] and the spaces). Thanks so much if you can do this!

I will do it tomarrow. By the way you will love its ability to close focus, great for butter fly shots and flowers.

Thanks much! I'm very excited to hear about the close focusing distance. Thanks again, I look forward to seeing the pictures!

You need to be able to write from computer to card because that's the only way to install camera firmware upgrades.
Having said that, I'd be surprised if any reader really was "one-way" only.
