No..it was just released around September 2007. The next upgrade will not be till about Feb. 2009.

The past schedule suggests an upgrade to the 40D in February, 2009.

Yeah, this is still a pretty new camera. Not counting the just-announced Digital Rebel XSi, the 40D is Canon's newest body. Take a look at Wikipedia's Canon EOS DSLR Timeline (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/40D#External_links) if you want to try and take a guess at Canon's pattern for releasing new equipment.

If you don't mind me asking, what's the reason for the shift?

Thanks guys for response.

gpx4- reason is lens cost. Going to eventually upgrade to 1dmkIII and get a 400/2.8 and 600/4 and they are much less costly then nikons super telephotos.
Wanting to just start with 40D to build up some new lenses and get a feel for canon's cameras before taking the big plunge into the bank account:)

Dang! That's gotta be the switch of the year...going from a Nikon shooter to buying Canon's top of the line sports photography rig (the machine gunning 1D mkIII, the jaw dropping 400 f/2.8, and the insane 600 f/4) Good choice to go with the 40D, I doubt it'll be upgraded and even an upgrade will not lessen the quality of the EOS 40D.

Real interesting, I have never seen the Canon range laid out like that. The 5D really sticks out as either a real successful product with little competition, or a line Canon are not interested in. I would say the former.

^Yup

AS for the 40D I suspect if it's anything Canon typically does a real upgrade won't occur till the 60D or whatever. It seems to take 2 cycles for the Rebel and xxD series to upgrade. 20D to 30D meh. XT to XTi meh. Even the XSi is meh...live view is about the biggest useful difference unless noise has improved.

make the jump jsjr4. i jumped ship from nikon when the 40d came out. it only made sense because of lens selection pricing. canon gear is much more affordable and iq is great. i wont lie though, if i had no budget, id go back to nikon and grab a d3 and d300. but thats another story. canon treats me well, dont think ill ever turn back.

ive just jumped from Nikon to Canon. I really wanted the D300 but the Nikon lens prices just put me off. Got a 40D now and am very happy with it.

No.. it was just released a few months ago. So no upgrade for about a year and a half. The next upcoming upgrade should be 5D's successor

Yeah, Nikon lenses are pretty insane. They charge 20-40% more than Canon's

I would say both. It's successful because people kept bitching about Canon not offering an affordable FF camera....the 1Ds series being a bit out of reach for most mortals.

I don't think Canon really gives a crap about the 5D series, since it was just to appease the FF whiners. Once the rose colored glasses come off the 5D owners and 5D wannabe owners, they'll start seeing what a dinosaur it's becoming & how lacking it really is in features, and bitch about an upgrade. At that point Canon will throw them another bone to chew on for awhile. Until then, Canon probably won't bother, since it'd be R&D wasted on replacing something that so many fanboys still consider the end all be all of photographic light boxes.
