View Full Version : NYC Photo Meetup: Chinese Lunar New Year Parade Feb 10
BottomBracket
29th of January 2008 (Tue), 13:05
I can't wait until spring to have a NYC POTN meet, so let's do it next weekend. Shake off those winter blues!
What: 9th Annual Chinese Lunar Parade. This is one of NYC's more colorful parades and there will be tons of people who don't mind their photos being taken. So if you are a bit hesitant in taking pictures of people you don't know, this is a good opportunity to unshackle those chains that inhibit your photographic potential.
Where: Manhattan Chinatown, Canal Street area. Our meeting place will be outside the Starbucks at the corner of Canal and Centre Street. I chose this because you can't really miss it, it's near the subway and it's near the bedlam of activities yet removed enough so we can have breathing space of our own.
When: Feb 10, 2008, Sunday. 12:15 PM. The parade starts at 1 PM, but I'd like to meet a bit early so that we can get to know each other a bit. The parade/festivities is slated to last from 1 to 5 PM.
How To Get There: I would suggest taking the subway as the place will be packed. Check the subway map (http://www.mta.info/nyct/maps/submap.htm) to determine which train is best for you to go the Canal Station in Manhattan. For a more detailed map go here (http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp?formtype=address&addtohistory=&address=Canal%20St%20%26%20Centre%20St&city=New%20York&state=NY&zipcode=10013&country=US&geodiff=1).
Equipment To Bring: Your camera! I like to use a wide angle lens because I like to immerse myself in the parade. You can bring a normal or tele lens too, depends on your photo style. Oh, and check the weather and dress accordingly. Preferably something red.
I hope to see you there! Here are some sample photos from past parades:

Hey Pio! I'd really love to come, but unfortunately I'll be up at Cornell visiting a friend.
I remember these pictures from the first POTN meet we had. Remember when I opened my new lens in the streets? And isn't this event like three weeks long? Surely I can make another weekend.

Darn Chris, I was hoping you would show up. Of course I remember that meet a couple of years ago. You were all smiles with that new lens that you just bought from B&H. The event is two weeks long, perhaps we can meet on the next Sunday too. Take care!

Choosing and Using Canon Lenses Presented by Canon

You! Just kidding Stephen. I'm sure Mark can take care of us. Truth be told though, I believe all of the restaurants will be closed, so we just might have to refuel ourselves at a street stall or something.
Apparently Wo Hop will be open on Sunday, though that's obviously not the best of ideas.
By the way, I have a spare XT if you need a camera Stephen, but I don't have a lens to go with it. Let me know if you'd like me to bring it next weekend.

Nah, I'd keep my Canon stuff, maybe paring down some glass.
I just want to give that Nikon stuff a try. I had the Nikon D100 before I switched to Canon. It was a great camera. I loved the interface on it. And I still like the feel of Nikon's rubber better.
And even if I did sell my Canon stuff, I've still got the G9, the best P&S.

I'm actually going to have to make my attendance tentative, all depends on the weather. I would be bringing my 70-200 2.8L, but then again, that is actually the only lens I own.

Do you think that would be enough length? I guess it depends where you can situate yourself.
I've got the 100-400L and 70-200 f4IS to choose from. I'm leaning towards the 70-200 because of the weather.
I'll probably bring my 24-105 as well.
I guess it'll be a good opportunity to test my 1D MKIII in less than idea weather conditions.
Any tips for shooting in the rain? Like any home made covers (plastic bags, etc) to cover the gear?

Yeah, you might want all the speed you can get if it's heavily overcast. If you're on in front of the crowd, you shouldn't need anything too long, might even find the 70-200 too long. Then again, I'm on a crop camera so my 70mm appears longer than it would on your 1D. The 24-105 and 100-400 might be a good set to bring if you don't mind bringing it all.
As much as I'd like it to clear up for Sunday, overcast skies should really help a neutral exposure bring out the color of the parade. We should keep an eye on the forecast as someone said, a predicting the weather six days in advance is ridiculous.

I might be able to swing the 100-400, 70-200 and 24-105.
I was at the Bronx zoo this weekend with the 35L, 16-35L, 70-200 and 100-400 and I was OK so.
I am figuring arriving around 9:30am-10am.
Just want to get an idea of where to situate myself. I know it's from Battery Part to Chambers street right? I guess I am looking for somewhere where there might be some space somewhere, even beyond the sidewalk...this way I can stay away from the very front of the crowd, and use my 100-400 from a bit further away.
I guess I just need to get there and figure it all out. (Including the much important scouting of where the nearest rest room is!)
Do you actually need a ticket to get to the ceremony at City Hall? Or is it first come first serve?

I am thinking either close to the starting point at Bowling Green, the Merrill Lynch Bull, or perhaps by the Trinity Church? Not sure...never been to one of these.
I'm definitely skipping city hall. Apparently they have a lottory system of getting in the immediate area. That ended at 7pm. Oh well...that area is probably going to be PACKED!!!
They are going to hold a ceremony at Giants Stadium, which I am more interested in attending. There are conflicting reports of the start time. It's either 2:30pm or 4pm.

They changed the Giants Stadium gig to 2:30pm, so I won't even bother...it's the NY Giants afterall!;)
I'll probably skip City Hall...probably not worth it from the street level with all those people. Actually depending how things go I might walk to City Hall...just to see how big the crowd is, then I am outta there!

Wow, I can't believe my luck. We are flying into NYC on Feb 8th and will be there for the parade (I didn't know about it until this post). We are staying at the La Quinta Manhattan,17 West 32nd Street. Will we be in the general area of the parade? I'm renting the Sigma 10-20mm so that should be perfect for close-ups.
We are flying in for the dog show at the garden Monday and Tuesday. Hadn't made definite sight-seeing plans for the weekend though - except for a couple of hours at B&H :), and a Broadway show.
Any other big events going on this weekend that we should try to see?
