I am not going to try to pretend to predict with any accuracy about what is coming or rumoured but I am very surprised at Canon altogether for its showing at PMA this year.

Compared to Nikon that announced the D300 and D3 last year and now with their new D60 and lenses at PMA, Canon's only salvo is the 450D and two long lenses. Both targetted at the extreme ends of the market - the entry and very well heeled long shooters.

They needed a show stealer at PMA but nothing was launched. Not even a replacement L lens for many shooters esp in the mid-zoom range that many rumoured as well.

To top the downturn of Canon, the 1DMk3 well documented AF problems - is causing so much "badwill" - and the overpricing of the new 1Ds3 compared to the D3. I am totally convinced that whoever is in charge of Canon right now, needs to be replaced. Its not just about the technology but its about being good in competition with Nikon. Nikon fell asleep some years ago and Canon now appears to suffer the same affliction. OR ARE THEY JUST TAKING TURNS?

Clearly someone has to tell Canon - why are they fighting with Nikon only at the entry level? Why aren't they working out a proper upgrade path for those who already own entry or mid level camera (body and lenses) products from the Canon system?

5D, 20D, 30D or mid level shooters who do not want to go Pro do not have anything to choose from to upgrade (to new).

Even if they decided to go Pro body - they risk either getting the defective AF 1Dm3 or the super expensive 1Ds mk3. If they understood the market, shooters will go now for preowned of the 1Dmk2n and the 1Ds Mk2 because they are RELIABLE and CHEAPER.

Canon really needs to wake up. I hope they are listening!

(formmers, please forgive the rant - I just needed to get that off my chest to anyone officially from Canon reading the forum)

Why do you need a hyperzoom? People with SLRs generally want good quality images, those things have compromises, and they're slow, aperture wise.

They fit the market at two points: the low end DSLR owners, where most of the SLRs are sold, and for those who travel and don't want to lug 70-200 f/2.8 zooms on their trips and vacations.

I'm somewhat surprised they didn't do more this year. I was somewhat hoping for an upgrade to the 5D so I could maybe think of getting the current 5D. Or maybe a few prime upgrades (again I may be in the minority here but I wanted the 24 and 35 upgraded to USM and the 20 just upgraded since it's such old technology, I also wanted the 400 upgraded but not to IS like everyone else, I want it to be f/4 so I don't lose AF (once I buy the lens this year) I think a few of the IS systems could be upgrade to the latest and greatest, like the 70-200 f2.8 and the 24-105 for example.)

the overpricing of the new 1Ds3 compared to the D3.

I think you are in error comparing these two cameras. the D3 and the 1D Mk.III are closer in comparision.

Sensor size is not the comparision. If the D3 was 22mp, then hell yeah.

Oh and Canon already makes a 18-200. It's called the 28-300. Use a 1.6 crop factor. You use it with one of Canon's 3 full frame DSLR or their entire range of film cameras.

Canon's version of the inexpensive hyperzoom is a 2-lens kit consisting of the new 18-55 IS and the new 55-250 IS. I await the true comparison between this pair and any of the superzooms offered out there, but I do see that the 18-55 produces very good image quality. If the sharpness, IS performance, distortion, flare, and contrast on the Canon pair outshines that of their competing superzooms, then Canon will have done the right thing IMHO.

Well, sigma just announced quite a few new lenses at PMA. Check it out on dpreview.
Cheers

i know what canons solution is, thats ok if people dont want to fork out for the Ls or whatever else is in that price range
but i would rather have one ****ty lens instead of two :) that covers 18-200 without having to switch between lenses, then 18-55 and then 55-250
