I Need a 77mm circular polarizer for Canon L-series

I usually just by Tiffen filters. I want a top quality CP for a couple of L-series lenses I am getting. What is the best for the money?

Actually the Canon 77mm CP looks like it's the best deal. I thought that I would have one by this fall but buying a 20D has gotten in the way! I do have Canon UV filters on all of my lenses and have been extremely pleased, so I would expect no less from a Canon Polarizer. Since I also have the 10-22 in my sights I would lso be looking for a narrow ring flash or there could be some vignetteing problems with that lens.

I haven't gone wrong yet with B+W filters. They are a bit expensive compared to the Tiffen filters, but...hell, you put down the cash for L glass...don't cheap out on the filters.

It's tough to beat a B+W MRC polarizer, although Heliopan's SH-PMC is probably about as good. Both are expensive.

For somewhat less money, B+W's non-MRC and Heliopan's non-SH-PMC are also fine filters.

I own one Heliopan filter, but it's not a polarizer. I own two B+W polarizers (58mm and 77mm), along with four other B+W filters that aren't polarizers, and even though I tried hard to convince myself that a $29 Sunpak polarizer is basically as good as a $129 B+W, my experience with B+W filters was such that I simply couldn't believe it. And I really wanted to believe it, since it would've saved me some coin. I won't bother listing how B+W differs from some lesser choices; you can go to http://www.schneideroptics.com/filters/filters_for_still_photography/the_b%2Bw_difference/ and read about it there.

Finally, while I don't own any, I've heard that Hoya's Super HMC line is really good. So I guess it might deserve to join B+W and Heliopan in the top tier of filters. But I can't say from my own personal experience.

You want my opinion? Buy B+W. Even if one or two other companies offer filters that are about as good, I don't think anyone offers anything better. Not that the difference between an average filter and a great filter is as vast as the difference between an average lens and a great lens, but despite what some people would have you believe, all filters are not created equal. And if you've spent all that money on L glass, you may as well go for the best filters.

I use a Canon CP. I hear they make pretty good lenses to. :wink:

You can get B+W filters on ebay from time to time at a decent price. I bought a 62mm CPL for $50. The same filter locally was almost $200 new...Dean

You can get B+W filters on ebay from time to time at a decent price.Yup. If you search for the seller " w.w.photo" (WorldWide Photo), he's always selling B+W filters, usually for a little less than B&H Photo. I've dealt with him, with no complaints. He seems to carry just about every B+W filter there is, and ships promptly (from Canada, but that doesn't really matter).

Of course, used B+W filters can sometimes be found on eBay for low prices. But I'd rather pay a few bucks more, and not risk getting a filter that's been scratched, or had its coating rubbed off by overly aggressive cleaning, or whatever. Not that I'm not tempted, sometimes.

I am hearing B+W are the best, but are Hoya's good enough?

I'll be puting this filter on my new 24-70 L lens. Seeing as I'm ok with dropping $1,200 on the lens, why does it feel so wrong to have to pay $250 for a B+W warming CP?

Where ever you are gettint $250 for the B+W CP you are getting raped. I bought mine new for $150 at a local store. Find another place to buy from. And yes, I have the 77mm.

In my own opinion, if you are paying soo much to get the L glass why put a "good enough" piece of glass in front of it?

high quality filter can only help slightly in situations where you will have flare. In other cases, it won't make too much of a difference. Even the best filters will degrade your image quality.
