I have been narrowing my pic for a 4mp camera down to one of these Canon models. I have heard nothing but good about the A80 but it is a discontinued model, does anyone know why? Also is there little or no difference between these other model other than 5 mp or swivel lcd. I assume they all have about the same picture quality. Any additional information would be appreciated

Thanks

The A80 was discontinued because it's superceded by the 5 MP A95. The A85 is intended as a successor for the A70. The A80 and A95 have a (35 mm. equivalent) 38-114 mm zoom. The A85 has a (35 mm equiv.) 35-105 mm zoom. Unless you plan to make 11 x 14 prints routinely, I'd suggest letting the swivel screen be the determining factor. It really is better than a fixed one for all sorts of odd shots.

Thats a great help. Seems like the A80 is the choice for me. I'm not in love with the swivel feature. AS I recall using the LCD to frame pics just eats op the batteies. Do you have any reccomendations on the type of batteries to buy, rechargeable? Would you say a 512 memory stick is the right size for this camera?
Thanks

I use mostly 256 MB in my A80, but then I also have 20D and D60, so the A80's a "carry camera" for day-to-day, mostly, not heavy-duty use. For batteries - definitely NiMH. If you're going to be away from the charger for a fair while, Energizer Li AA cells run about $10/4 pack and last forever. I quite agree about the effects of the LCD display on battery life, but there are times when you need to get a shot from an odd angle, and the tilt feature is invaluable for over-the-head or ground-level shots.

Don't worry about batteries and using the LCD to frame pictures with the A80 because the battery life is huge. I use the LCD for 99% of photos and get 300+ from a singe charge, and thats with lots of flash use as well. You will come to love a swivel LCD when you find yourself in positions where you have to use it. and before long you use it for everything.

Thanks for the information on batteries. The A80 seems to have a lot going for it in the 4 mp range. I have a general question for anyone. I am going to buy my camera online. The prices are better and you can't buy it anywhere else. Any suggestions for a site to buy from? I know there are quite a few. Anyone had a particularly bad experience with one??

B&H is good (when they re-open the 10th).

I'm having a hard time finding the A80 by Canon as it is discontinued. When I do find it its still around $300. I see the A95 is suppose to be the upgrade of the A80. It sells for around the same price. I know its a 5mp model but is there any other difference? And all things considered buying it as opposed to the A80?

Thanks

i just bought the A85 myself. and it's a great camera. i bought it for $269. it's basically the same camera as the a80 except for the swivel screen. i don't find much use of that swivel screen...what odd shooting positions will i find myself in??? i don't seem to understand that.

unless u need 5mp or the swivel screen, i definitely go for the a85.

Swivel screen....hmmm

As a trained product designer, my first fear was that this would wear at the hinge, or worse, get knocked clean off.

Ah but when you get to use the thing, it really is a fantastic feature.

1) I can routinely take shots from very low points of view and track the shot by looking down on the camera rather than having to lay flat on the ground.

I've recently used street furniture to place my tripod on, tracking the shot by looking up from below. All I had to do was swivel the screen to a downward position. Its very liberating!

Occasionally you might want to do a self portrait, well you just swivel the screen to point forwards.

Take candid shots of people, you can track your shots from all sorts of casual positions without the usual sighting positions that tell people your about to "shoot em".

To know the swivel viewing screen is to love it!

I have an A-80 myself & love it. The swivel LCD screen is great, especially for holding it above a crowd & seeing what you're shooting. I also enjoy using it on vacation to take pics of my g/f and I w/out having to use a tripod or asking a stranger to take our pic ;)

You cannot print 11x14 prints from a 5MP camera! You need a camera with an image sensor big enough to capture that size without enlarging the image after it's taken. If you enlarge an image after it is taken you are only degrading the quality of the image.

Yeah. My A80 prints at 5x7 without digital enlargement, but only just.
11x14 cm maybe?

How far from the print are you willing to be so the dots aren't visible? 200 dpi is about minimum for a print held in your hand. 300 is pretty good. 11X14 a couple of feet away might look good at 200dpi. A quick visual test might help you decide. Some possible dot densities:

For 11x14 @ 200 dpi:
200x11 x 200x14 = 6.16MP

For 11x14 @ 300 dpi:
300x11 x 300x14 = 13.86MP

Hi pursuant,
I'm new here just found this forum today. If you haven't bought a camera yet, I just bought an A80 at a Staples for $200. It was a display unit but the store has only been open for a couple months and so far it's great, but only time will tell.
