I own a Canon 10D (replaced my previous camera - Canon D60).
I'm pretty happy with the 10D, accept from the sensor which doesn't cover full frame...:(
This is really annoying when trying to shoot a photo indoors or a large landscape picture.
I've tried several different lenses on it, but wasn't very happy with the wide angle ones that suppose to compensate on the sensor problem.
The main lens that I use now is the Canon 24-80 USM lens.
Does anyone know of plans from Canon to come out with a new camera that will have full frame sensor?
Unfortunatly, The 1D series is way of my budget....

No. This is a premium feature. the 10/20D line is a mid-range line. Like the 300D/Rebel is the entry-range line. The 1D line (1D and 1Ds) are professional cameras, as Canon deems them, and will have the top-end features. That is why there is a difference between the 1D and the 1Ds. The 1Ds Mark II is the Canon Flagship.
Full-frame is currently reserved for the Flagship Model. Besides, considering the price difference between the 1D and 1Ds it is mainly in the chip, and now the wireless capability. and the 1Ds is a slower camera, frame rate wise.
I cannot see a full-frame chip for anything but the 1Ds models for quite a while. Besides, it would make more sense that the 1D would get the chip before the 10/20D models.

Your best option may be to sell the 10D and get a 20D, then buy the new EF-S 10-22 Lens (the 10D can't take EF-S lenses). The coverage of the EF-S 10-22 on a 20D is the same as Canon's EF 16-35 on a full frame camera.

It won't happen this year, but if in 4-years we went from the D30 to the 20D. [3.2 mega pixels -- 8.2 mega pixels + a thousand dollar drop in price] I have to imagine in the next 4 years we will have full frame across the board.
But in the mean time--full frame, not just yet for under 6 grand.

I don't see it happening, ever, or at least not for another 10 years.
The reason for this is that thought he technology is obviously there, if they make everything with a full frame sensor, that produces little noise etc etc, then what the hell would be the point of buying a pro $8000 camera?
From a business standpoint, there is absolutely no reason for Canon or anyone else to start throwing full framed sensors into any of their low model camera's.
Canon pretty much has four levels
300D 1.6
10/20D 1.6
1D 1.3
1Ds Full
They need to keep some space between these models, so unless you are planning on spending $5000 don't expect to have a camera with a full framed sensor. Bigger sensor also allows for more photosites with lower noise effect, so the number of photosites is directly related to sensor size. They can make a 16 mpx 20d, on the same sensor, but noise, would be awful. I could be wrong though.

Why did the pros buy the Canon Eos 1N, 1N HS etc when film was the used the most then ?
It isn't the sensor size that makes them buy the 1D. It is the features and rugged-ness. So canon can make full frame consumer cameras without having the "problem" of pros not buying the top of the line cameras.

It almost certainly won't (never say never :) ) happen in the next few years. Canon have announced that their strategy is to have full-frame in their flagship cameras and the 1.6 crop sensor in their low-end consumer ranges.
My prediction is that the 1D Mk x will become FF as soon as Canon can ensure, at least, 8 fps and a 40 frame buffer. I think we would then see the 3 series equivalent that would have the 1.3 crop.
The vast majority of users of the low-end cameras aren't interested in making pictures, but recording memories and then printing 6x4's or emailing friends and family. Current chip sizes and pixel counts are perfectly adequate for this.

It simply won't happen anytime soon.
Count on it
Instead, look into getting a seriously wide lens. There are several comming soon + there is allready a great one in the sigma 12-24

Why is everyone saying no? Canon did come out with a new, full frame sensor DSLR: the 1Ds Mark II, with 16.7 megapixels. But it costs $8,000.
But ofcourse, you want a camera in the range of the 10D with a full frame sensor. It will not be released very soon. They just released the 20D which has an 1.6x crop factor, and the fact that they've introduced some new EF-S lenses, which are especially made for 1.6x crop factor cameras (300D and 20D) indicates that Canon plans to stay with this sensor format for at least a number of years.

Personally I love the 1.3 crop on my 1D Mark II. Since I primarilary shoot sports it's great.

From the horses mouth Canon have no plans to change the current sensor size to camera range lineup in the forseeable future.

I would image this will only change in response to market competition.

Yes.. The 1.6 crop will be around for a while..
If the APS sized sensors were just a flash in the pan, Canon wouldn't be developing and marketing a whole lens line (EF-S) specifically for cameras that use this sensor..
Also, Canon has introduced a feature in the new 580EX flash where the flash compensates for the 1.6 crop in the 20D and adjusts the back reflector to shape the beam accordingly.
There may be a cheaper version of 1Ds in the future, but I'm pretty sure Canon is committed to the APS sized sensor for a long time to come..

... They just did, it's called 1Ds MKII
Unfortunatly, The 1D series is way of my budget....
That is the downside ... but with the sensor being the single most expensive part of the camera, and more people considering the 1.6 crop as an advantage (longer reach for teles) than a disadvantage, it will stay that expensive. There's just no money to be earned for Canon (or any other manufacturer) with a 1.0x prosumer camera. Accept it.
Best regards,
Andy
