I see a lot of pictures on here that are stunning in black and white, but I seem to struggle to get them to turn out right. One picture in particular, which i have posted a link to the raw file. If anyone wants to give it a try, I would love to see what some of you can do. I am particulary interested in seeing it done by just using Lightroom, but any methods are welcome. Thanks!

Here is my best shot.

I don't have Lightroom,

So here is my try processed through DPP.

Did desaturation in PS
Slight bump in contrast and brightness to keep the "Welding" in the window
finally cropped it down to remove the edge plant life

I think though, that if you can go back and shoot the scene...it would look more pleasing to the eye in regards to horizon with that top wood bar to be straight, just my opinion ;). It gives a false sense of crooked horizon.:D

I added a Hue adjustment layer and reduced the master hue all the way to the left. Then a contrast layer and added a little contrast. It was a little blue so I ran a warming filter over it.

Decided to crop this interesting portion. Red is my favorite color so I just had to. ;)

That's a good idea. I like your vision of it.

I think this would be a pretty tough shot for a BW conversion. The entire image is on a single plane, and the common color results in a fairly flat lighting effect. Consequently, it will be tough to get much contrast and provide much depth within the image.:(

danpass,
Do you mind sharing how you did those? It looks like you added a bit of a shadow tunnel around the outsides. Thanks!

LR has a vignette function.

All images done in LR.

The first one had no vignette applied, the second two were done more with split toning (and vignette).

Here is my go at it.
1. Crop
2. Hue/Saturation adjustment layer. Check "Colorize", desaturate almost all the way, and adjust hue to my liking.
3. Curves adjustment layer. Steepen the mid-tone curve for contrast.

I really like these all, especially caysnco and stark.

I really like the vignette on this picture. I need to play around with that some more!

Here is my try at it I did an unsharp mask, a high pass sharpening mask at 2.0 I believe with a layer setting of soft light, a layer with a soft light setting to dodge and burn, and levels.
