Hmmm...should my lens *sound* this way?

Well, I've noticed this since I got my Dreb on Sunday that my stock lens seems a bit loud when zooming (not when focusing). I can only explain it as this...it sounds like a plasic hinge that has sand in it...very gritty.

It works just great. Takes great pictures, but does sound gritty and a tad squeeky at times. Problem? or just annoyance?

My POS kit lens for the Elan 7N makes the same gritty noise when zooming too. I sum it up to the cheap quality of current canon lens.

I plan to dump this lens as soon as possible. I hate the kit lenses so much I'll gladly pass on the kit lens when I get my digital body.

Thanks for the quick response. I figured that was the case. The body works just great. Pictures look great. Just makes an annoying sound. I plan to start workin on savin for new lenses soon. So, I'll probably just make do with the one I have until then. I'm always open for other opinions though.

I'm going to throw this one back up to the top. Just want to make sure that a noisy lens won't actually cause any problems with the camera body.

you should buy an L lens to fix that problem, you won't even hear the :wink:

It sounds like sand because that's pretty much exacly what it is :)

I've serviced many lenses and these plastic lenses are all like this.Even a single grain can make it feel/sound bad :shock: .
The solution is usually quite easy-take it off the camera and run it through it's zoom range very quickly a few times.The zoom spirals tend to be self cleaning but it takes abit of speed to make it happen.The grain/s will be pushed out of the way and will be stuck in the grease beside the zoom spiral parts where they are completely harmless.
If it still doesn't self clean after about 20 turns then you may have to consider getting it serviced.Or just ignore it as it will take ages to do much damage and will likely clean it'self sometime....and servicing costs may exeed the value of the lens

And no,don't worry-it can't hurt the camera in any way

I haven't tried to zoom both ways 20 times in a row, but I can guarantee that I have gone through the entire zoom range 20 times since I got the camera on Sunday. Unfortunately, nothing has changed. It still sounds exactly like it did when I bought it. Grainy sound that can actually squeak a little when the zoom is performed quickly.

I still do have the 15 day, no questions asked return period from Best Buy. I can return this entire kit for a new on that may or may not have something in the grooves. Is it worth exchanging? Or should I just learn to deal with it as my next lens could end up with the same problem (even if it's perfect when bought).

Edit: After more carefully rereading your post, I will try zooming to both extremes with some speed tonight to see if that clears things out. Thanks for the heads up.

Unfortunately, going through the entire zoom range about twenty times pretty quickly hasn't fixed my problem. I think this one *might* be going back to Best Buy tonight.
