What exactly is wrong with the eBay filters? Paying $25 for 3 77m filters seems okay, I guess, at least in comparison to $100 for one.

I know Ive heard about not putting cheat glass in front of a expensive lens, but has anyone actually done a comparison?

I've never done a comparison but you really do get what you pay for.

I had a few Ebay filters for my 50 1.8 and they worked fine for what I was doing. I think with the more expensive filters you get better glass and more coatings.....

Good question...I was wondering the same thing. I ordered a few on ebay yesterday----if they are the real deal what is the difference?

I think it comes down to getting "every last detail".......??

I think the real question is how you know whether you're actually getting "the real deal" from eBay sellers. As has been amply demonstrated (see the associated sticky), there are a fair number of counterfeit memory cards from eBay sellers; filters are no harder to counterfeit.

Yeah cheaper filters have much lower light transmission and are far more prone to glare and generally making the image less sharp.

When I bought my first DSLR a few years ago the guy sold me on a UV filter to go with it. It was a no name deal that RUINED what could have otherwise been decent pictures. Filter off, problem solved.

I bought a whole set for my 18-50 since it's 67mm. THe UV filter on it is quite nice actually and so is the soft focus, graduated red, macro, CPL (although I never use it), and 6 point star filter. They work great and get the job done. I've used the soft focus one a lot. I can understand UV filters, maybe. Clearer glass etc, but I've done some side by side testing and it passes. Especially for what the filter does for me.
