View Full Version : I'm glad I didn't buy a 10D with those constant lockups

I am so sick of hearing the "glad I didn't get a 20D", so I decided to start a 10D lockup thread.
Do you realize that a 10D pretty much locks up for 30 to 40 seconds every time you fill it's buffer? Oh yeah, that's not considered a "lockup" because it can still take like 1 picture every 2 to 3 seconds at that point just like a $100 point and shoot digital. The 20D clears a full buffer in 8-9 seconds, and clears a lockup in 2-3 seconds, so I am saving 20-30 seconds every single time I fill the buffer, and only losing 2 seconds every 500 pictures on a lockup. That's a net gain of about 1500 seconds for every 500 pictures, nearly half an hour saved with my 20D. So, I for one am very glad I didn't buy a 10D.
I'll bet you 10D owners are also glad you decided to stick with your Ford Mustangs instead of getting this Lamborghini Gallardo. I heard this car has to be tuned up like once a year!!! What a pain, who would want one of those? (intense sarcasm intended, and no, I don't drive a Mustang)

I for one take offense to the mustang comment. and no, I don't drive a mustang....it sits in my garage nice and polished. I am sure if I could get it started it would run just fine though.

Sounds like you have more than 10D envy.
And when I fill up my buffer, at least I don't have to take out the battery before I can take another shot.

Same here, though I actually DO drive my Mustang... '93 5.0. I bought it in 1995 and have had absolutely no problems with it at all, and have never felt a moment of regret in getting it.
On the other issue, though, I haven't owned a 10D... I had been saving up to get one, and then Canon releases the 20D... so it's a 20D for me! I'm supposed to get it tomorrow.

Ok, ok, I actually do own a Mustang too, it's just that I haven't driven it in years. The point was not to knock Mustang owners, just the Mustang owners that would be silly enough to say they were glad they decided not to buy the Lamborghini because it needed an occasional tuneup, like the 10D owners are dreaming that their 10Ds are better because they think their constant 30 second delays are somehow better than an occasional 2 second lockup.
Congrats on your 20D. You won't be disappointed, trust me. And don't worry about all the lockup talk. If and when it does happen to you, just remember as soon as it happens to just pop the battery out and in, and I am sure you will join the "Glad I didn't get a 10D" group when you realize how comical the lockup is given how bad everyone makes it sound.
I'm not even rushing out to get the flash upgrade, either. Why bother? It's not that bad. I'll let Canon properly work out the issues and maybe do a firmware upgrade a month or so from now when they add new features.

I've had my 10D for a while now...have more that 10,000 exposures through it, and I've never had a lockup problem. I don't just hold the trigger down and pray something works. I take short bursts when the subject is right. It's all about how you shoot and learning your equipment. The 20D has plenty of warts from what I've been reading. The 10D is a kick ass camera and I'm glad I own it, and I would recommend it to anyone that want's to enter the higer end digital SLR world. My next camera will be the 1D Mark II...you wanna talk about a cameras ability to empty the buffer?
As for cars. I've got a 94 Nissan Pathfinder, a 2002 Volvo C70 Coupe, and a 1981 Ferrari 308 GTSi. As you can see...I often just "settle" for mediocre things.

I think a person would be insane to say a 10D is better, its not. At this point yes many 20D's are very buggy an problematic, but that doesnt make them worse.
Other then then that, a Galardo? atleast you could have done one better an said Murchialago, which would be the Mark II, the 20D? more like a roadster, lets say a BMW Z4. Small and quick
Which reminds me, I got to drive a Ferrari F40 today, stupid boss wont allow me to take pictures though :( I'm so shameless
Cheers

I've also had my 10D for a few a while now, more than 8,000 exposures and have several 'lockups' in SINGLE SHOT mode (i.e. not spray and pray). When I'm at the side of a race track photographing the numerous cars as the whizz by, I (too) frequently get the 'lockup'. I realize that for this type of shooting that the 1D Mk II would be better suited to the task, however there is a much larger cost involved. So, in this situation, the 20D will better suit my needs.
For the rest of the photography that I do the 10D is perfect.

Lambos? Nah... they're all cr@p. I've only ever once seen a Lambo on track against other makes in all the years I've been watching motorsport... it was in the British GT championship this year and it got its ass whipped by an Elise  Now I KNOW why I haven't seen them before
