Just got back from a 3-week holiday in the Philippines. We went to Manila, Cebu and Boracay. Boracay is a beautiful small island with white sandy beaches. You'd think I'd get to take some nice photos? Ha! We were too busy doing all sorts of other things. That's not necessarily a bad thing but I wish I had more time to concentrate on photography.
Who among you have small kids? How do you manage your photography when the whole family's together on holiday? Of course, I have lots of photos of the family but nothing really "artsy". We didn't do much sightseeing or hiking. The wife and kids just wanted to play on the beach. Oh well, at least it was a fun holiday. Now I need another holiday just to recover. :)

Calmly explain to your family, that you'll all be going again for the photographs. And this time, they must not whine while daddy spends 15 minutes taking a picture of a chunk of grass, a tree, a window, or a sail boat on the beach. The kids are expected to pose naturally, and have smiles on their faces even when stuck playing in the surf for an hour as daddy gets some 'candid' shots.
At no time will they rush the photographer or whine about "I'm bored", "Aren't you finished YET?", "Are you done yet, are you done yet, are you..."
Next time, buy cameras for them all. Then while they are busy taking their photos, you can take yours, or, sit under a tree and sleep while they take photos 'for you'... :)

I have a 2 1/2 yr old that loves to be in front of the camera. He has taken to it like a fish to water, so to speak. However, I too find that I need some alone time and want to expand into other territories.
I just say to the wife, you take the boy and I take the camera, later on, I will take him and you can spend time doing what you would like to do. When we both have accomplished what we wanted we will spend time together. simple. seems to work in our household and I normally get a few hundred pics out of the deal

That's great! I wish our kids were like that. Our 5-year old doesn't particularly like getting his picture taken. When he does agree, he has this weird looking forced smile on his face. As for the 16-month old, she's such a character and a wonderful subject. However, whenever she sees the camera pointing at her she runs towards me so she can have a look at the pictures on the back of the camera. I guess she's learned chimping from me. Now if I can only teach her to wait till after I've taken the photo. :)

Chris, good idea... except that I have another addiction: golf. That means I'm gone all morning so I need to make up for it by being around in the afternoon. I'll try it next time though.

Get up before everyone else and you can often get in the sunrise and another hour or so of photography and be back before anyone misses you! Until the winter eats away our daylight, that is!!
Pick at least one morning or afternoon to go where you want to take pictures - you are entitled - take anyone along that wants to go but make sure they understand you are there for a reason. My family generally tolerates this as long as I don't overdo it!! I also provide a cheap camera to my daughter to join in.
Suggest dinner at a place known for good scenery and sunsets. ALWAYS have your camera with you - stop on the side of the road if something catches your eye. I am learning that we can convince ourselves that we never have time to do the things we want to do - if they are important you have to make the time!!
