Took several photos of this Kookaburra whilst in Bowral, NSW yesterday:

It's not the best looking example I've seen but beggars can't be choosers. I've cropped three images and joined them together. The larger image can be seen here:

The photos were taken with a 10D using a 17-40 mm lens.

Please let me know what you think.

The 'straight on' photo in the middle is the best IMHO. When photographing wild animals, you take the best shot you can. It's so damn difficult to get them to pose. :D

You did good to get those photos.

Are they fully grown? When I think of their very loud and raucous call, I'm surprised they aren't larger. I've heard recordings of their call many times but I don't think I've seen a picture of them until now. Quite interesting.

Hi Bruce,

Not sure whether this example is full grown. I've only seen a couple up close before now and this is the first I've photographed.

We can hear quite a few at night and have seen one in the trees at the side of the house.

Unless I can tempt him down to the porch or I can convince the financial controller (wife) that I need a 70-200 mm, this may be the best photo I can get. :D

I have a few closeups of this bird, but I have never heard it call.
