Here's one of a series taken during a very exclusive dance improv. that I had the pleasure of attending last weekend. Straight out the camera and resized.

Using a 580EX (ETTL) on a 20D at 2.8 and 1/30 sec.

I expected to see some bluring, but I was hoping to freeze enough of the action for it to make sense.

I didn't want the background underexposed either.

Is it possible? Should I have used a higher ISO? Perhaps another flash for the background?

Yes a higher ISO 1/30th of a sec is a little to slow of a shutter speed for hand held and a moving subject. A tripod would have helped also.

Sync the flash with the secound curtain. This will blur the back end not the front
1/125 or less to stop or get a little motion
ISO 400ish?
WB is off a bit.
That's what I would have tried to start and then make adjustments as needed. Hope helps

It can be done. Here is my sample for you to compare.
20D on manual @ 1/250, f/3.5, ISO 400, dual flash fired from the balcony above and behind. They were on manual at 1/4 power.

Thanks for quick replies.

Mike, Great shot! I can see the one flash to the right and above the camera. Where's the other flash? Is it pointing towards or away from the subject?

Up your shutter speed so that the ambient light doesn't give you blur.

I'll use a flash for the background next time. I think can get a faster shutter speed that way.

Shutterfiend, here is a link to my post in the Sports section that shows my setup. Also, lots of good feedback. I will be working on a way to reduce/eliminate the shadows at the next game.

Very helpful post. I wasn't thinking in terms of sports when I took those shots. I guess it's a little different from portraits.
