Since Canon pulled the firmware upgrade for the 20D from their website there has been nothing posted by them or any communication from them on why or when it will be corrected. Is this their normal course of operation? I find it bothersome that people downloaded and installed the firmware and that some of them had problems that left the camera inoperative but I can live with it because I feel confident that it will be recitified. What I find it totally unacceptable is Canon's lack of customer focus and the fact that Canon has provided ZERO communication. Any thoughts?

Have you called Canon? My 20D works fine, I can, and have, swapped lenses all day with no problems. Does your work? If so, what is the problem?

I have the 20D and installed the firmware update without a problem. I don't really feel I have any complaints as far as my specific situation goes, but do believe that how Canon handles this is important. If nothing else, it will contribute greatly to my peace of mind if I should have a problem sometime in the future.

I suspect what's going on is that Canon rushed to make the 'fix' (version 1.0.4) available. In so doing, they're created the opposite effect by exacerbating what was previously only a potential problem into a fatal glitch for those whose cameras died. Nearly as bad was causing doubt among those who installed the upgrade already.

They won’t be so quick to rush the next upgrade. The damage in customer confidence has already happened, and it won’t be reversed anytime soon. Another screwup will only make things worse, and they very likely will be unwilling to take that chance..

No problems because I have not installed it. What bothers me is that people have and they know there is an issue but they pull the firmware with no other additional information. Not the right way to deal with customers. At all.

I'm waiting for a 20D and I don't like this situation. I'd already downloaded the 1.06 firmware, but now I'm thinking of cancelling my order.

I think they should issue a statement.

My 20 locked up when I first got it and hasn't locked since :? Over 1000 pics. I did the firm update and it went ok. 20 still works ok but like Belmondo said I still feel uneasy with others having problems. Now the BG-E2 is a different matter. It just doesn't fit correctly. I know of others having a similar problems with the BG-E2. Its loose and will spring away from the body at the battery end causing the cam to cut off and back on. Putting 4 layers of paper on the other end will make it fit tighter but thats not a proper fix. Mine is being returned to B&H as soon as they open Sunday and maybe Canon will revise that guy. Even though my 20 works well not I still feel uneasy and hope they resolve the issues soon... My big concern is just how big is the problem. With all the talk it sounds BIG but it really may be a very small # of failures and we wouldn't know it. :D

I may not own a 20D, or plan on purchasing one anytime soon, but to me this situation reminds me of car manufacturers when they come out with a brand new model. Sometimes there are initial glitches within the first year, but they get researched and corrected. So I am sure that canon will do what they can to repair both the cameras that have been sold and the confidence of us all.

....so i guess this is the wrong time to start bugging canon about the bad flaw in the file viewer utility software..?

I'd say that their code writing guys will be all flat out about right now!

No, hit them with it - the guys working on the firmware for the 20D are a completely separate group, since they're doing different software for a different platform and with different constraints. Might as well make the Windows developers feel needed!
