View Full Version : More fps in Continuous Shooting mode?

Does anyone know if you can get more frames per second (in Continouos Mode shooting) out of a G-series camera than what's advertised?

For example, my G3 manual says, 2.5 fps in the "High Speed" mode; with settings of Large/Fine and the LCD turned off.

I'm planning to experiment with this soon, but am wonding if anyone has experience with this.

What variables and setting affect fps?

I'm pretty sure the battery charge level affects it. It seems much faster when the camera is plugged into the charger vs. running off a weak battery.

Will Small/Normal make it faster than Large/Fine? The manual implies it might, but maybe I'll just get more frames before the buffer fills up.

Is Manual faster than Av, Tv,...?

Anyone know?

Eyeris,

All the automatic functions will slow down the FPS rate. Sooooo.....pre-focus if possible and switch to manual focus (or manual focus to begin with). Set your exposure manually, and same for the white balance. Keep the LCD off so you get plenty of juice to the camera. having shutter speeds over 1/250 will also help keep the frame rate as high as possible.

I think that's everything, but I may have missed something.

Thanks Jeff. I didn't think of the shutter speed. I doubt I'll be able to change the shutter speed much but it would obviously play a role in fps, especially long shutters.

I'm not so sure about the automatics, such as focus and exposure, as they might delay only the first exposure, but then remain locked throughout the remaining exposures - keeping the fps unchanged.

It would be nice to know if this is true, especialy if you're paning something fast where the available light changes along the way, or you're continuously shooting someting that's moving towards you. You might only have one photo in focus!

I still need to experiment with this.

Yeah....I was thinking more in terms of speeding the camera up overall. I always try to eliminate 1 or more of the automatic features

I can tell you that the continuous shooting mode speeds up shooting.

However, as I always use RAW, it's not more FPS ... it's less SPF
But 2.5 SPF instead of 5 might be correct.
