Although I haven't had a chance to try this beast out in the theatre yet.. I could not help but play with it a bit...
Here are two plant photos followed by 100% crops.

Needless to say the depth of field is insane.
These were both f/1.8 1/800th second at about 15 feet from the subject. 1D mkII Raw ISO 320

Well, If you ever wanted shallow dof out of this focal length, you've certainly got it with this lens.
I like how sharp of detail it demonstrated with the fine Spider webbing on that plant.
Now, When are you going to take it to the Theater? I'm curious how it will perform for you in those sittuations too. :D

Made.. past tense :(
Canon stopped making it sme years ago..
Man is it wierd to work with.. @ 6.6 poounds it virtually weighs exactly the same as my 500mm f/4.5  (6.8lbs)
In fact.. it looks like the front element is the same diameter too (I haven't actually measured yet)
So essentially you take a 500mm prime.. and push down on the top of it to collapse it like a Captains brass telescope... and when it's all squished down you have this lens. :P
Hand holding .. thus ,. is a joke!
( I forgot to mention in my original post that I was using a monopod)
Well see.. this may be too much lens for me to handle in the long run..

Man that is sharp for f/1.8.
What is a 200 f/1.8 used for anyhow? Indoor theater shots? I am surprised Canon had the nerve to build this lens in the first place. It takes great photos, but there couldn't have been much of a market for it.
You'll have to keep posting new photos from this lens. I am interested to see what kind of images you can grab with it.
who me?
