I dont think I totally understand the Safety Shift function on the 20D.
Can somebody give an example of when you would use this?
[typed, single-sided, then, please compare and contrast...]

I think............and I could be mistaken............that when you're on TV / AV mode...........and you don't have enough one or the other to let in the light............the camera will componsate for you.

So............if you put your shutter speed at 1/250 for example at TV mode..........and if the exposure is >-2, then the camera will automatically change it to the correct shutter speed...............

I think...............

.............because I enabled this feature once, I actually thought that my camera was defective cuz my set shutter speed kept jumping up and down the scale on TV mode!!!...............As they say, blame the camera, not the user :-)

Safety shift will kick in when your exposure at the desired setting (say 1/250 for TV) would go off the ends - if it can't stop down past, say your min. aperture is f/22, to make your exposure, it'll shift to 1/500, 1/1000, . . . until it can give you f/22 and a good exposure. If there isn't enough light wide open at f/2.8, it'll move to a slower shutter speed until exposure is OK at f/ 2.8. I loved it on my T-90, and it's one of the things that decided me on moving to the 20D from the D60 (along with the additional focussing points , start-up and the buffer - megapixels had nothing to do with it - they're just a fringe benefit).

Ah ok thanks.
So, this would have been handy when I was shooting football with my Rebel, at F2 in AV mode, and at times I would bump into the 1/4000s upper limit of the shutter?
Although, I cant remember if safety shift was available on the Rebel now.
