John, great images. I'd love to spend a day with you just watching and learning your technique. Great, great stuff. I think #7 is my favorite.

Great collection of shots as usual John. One of these days I'll get to that race.

While watching the broadcast, I just knew you'd be working hard, and figured that the light, wasn't working in your favour. The lack of a sunrise and sunset no doubt took away a few possiblites.
Great stuff as always

John, those are beautiful. Would you share your exif data on the Gnassi/ferris wheel shot. I did not shoot after dark, but after seeing those images, I will next year.

I have a LLLLOOOOONNNNNGGGGGG way to go... btw, if you don't know yet, this is my favorite.

Thanks, you'll find the EXIF data is intact on all of the images.

I noted that earlier, and some of those slow shutter speeds make me say; Great job of panning. ;)

Yep... it's been at least three years in a row without a decent sunset or first light.

Thanks... I guess you need to remember that all those elements are part of what is happening. You can't discount them because you feel they'll spoil your shot. Find a way to include the elements and make them part of your story.

PS: I have to tell you, I find your "signature" a bit lame. I mean, what's that all about? We've all done battle, we all have scars. Move on.

Are you handholding at 1/30th, or monopod?

Handheld.
My monopod is attached to my 500mm - that doesn't see much action at 1/30th. Though I have shot it at 1/60th. :)

I think #7 is my favorite, also. I watched a lot of the race on TV and the ferris wheel was always a part of the background. It's cool to see it incorporated in photos.
Great photos, John!!:)

All great shots John but I particularly like number 7 and the portrait of Derek Bell.

Hey John, on Derek Bell's portrait, I was just wondering why you don't go and crop out or paint out that nose and face on the right side of frame? I do very little post work on my photos as well, but it seems like that would be a good case of when to do some minor cleanup. Just wanted to get your thoughts on it. Great stuff as always though!

Fair question.. a.) it doesn't really bother me. b.) I suppose if the picture was needed for editorial or commercial use, I'd probably clone it out.
Truth be known, though... I do all my post work and editing in Aperture and rarely open Photoshop anymore. Cloning would require Photoshop. ;) I'm only going to do that if an image is sold... or needs a portfolio finish. Given the amount of shooting I do, editing is done on a priority basis.
Thanks!
