I am kinda curious as to why I may be getting so much noise is my shots. These shots where done at ISO800 at f:2.8 and 1/250. I used auto white, as these where taken before I found this site and have been ready up on some custom settings. Could this be part of my problem? Or. should I be looking to add some strobes in the balcony. If I up the ISO will it clear up the noise, or just add to it, like I think it would?
These are also the first pics I took with the 1D I just picked up. Was a nice step up from the 10D that I had been trying to shoot sports with.
Some comments would be great on the questions and the pics.

From what I've read, the 1D is noisy at high ISOs. And you are correct, upping the ISO will introduce more noise.

Did you process these pictures in any way? IIRC, noise becomes more apparent if the image is underexposed.

I did a little in Lightroom with the photo. So, if I up the ISO and overexpose a little, will it take care of the noise problem?

With my 40D, I shoot at ISO 3200 and tweak the settings until I have the histogram to the right without blowing highlights. It leaves me at 1/400 f/2.5 with prime lenses.
I then do some NR and sharpening in Lightroom. You can see my results on my web page. I don't think the noise is an issue.

I still have my 1D and yes the higher iso will induce noise. And if you under expose it gets worse. Do you have a noise reduction program like Noise Ninja or Noiseware? These don't look that bad noise wise and a pass thru NN would really help. If you could strobe the gym and get your iso at 400 it would really help. Enjoy that 1D, it is still a fine camera.

So, if I really want to get some really good quality sports shots without having to add the extra lighting, should I just off load this and move the Mark II? I am wanting a camera that I can get some nice quality stuff with, such as the occasional small wedding or other event. I will primarily be shooting for new print, however and therefore figured this would work fine. I just wasn't that impressed with my first shoot with the camera.
Would moving to a manual white balance make much difference in the noise, or do I just need to move the ISO up, over expose a little, and run some noise reduction software?

kirtapp,
The white balance will not affect the level of noise, and upping the ISO will only introduce more noise. As it has been said here, the older 1D bodies have more noise at ISO 800 and above than does say a Mark II N body. Your best bet is going to be some sort of noise removal software, such as Noise Ninja.

Yes you need to introduce flash. If you can use on camera flash, angle it up to bounce of the ceiling. Otherwise, strobes are the way you will have to go.
For the record, these look pretty darn good. Run through Noise Ninja or tryout the free download for Neat Image. You will like the results.
