I'll install that in a while, though - since 1.04 worked fine on my 20D - I doubt I'll see much change. :)

We have discovered that the version 1.0.4 firmware released on October 4 had a bug in the program that handles the update. In cases where the update was performed with a lens attached to the camera, there were situations in which the firmware could not be updated correctly.
In cases where the firmware was not updated correctly, the camera might not power on, the camera might not communicate properly with the lens and flash, or similar malfunctions might occur.
Canon offers its sincerest apologies to customers who have been inconvenienced by this situation.
Even for customers who successfully updated to the version 1.0.4 firmware without incident, Canon recommends updating to the new version 1.0.5 firmware for the sake of certainty.
Note: The bug described has been fixed in the version 1.0.5 firmware, but please remove the lens from the camera when performing this update.
Customers who were unable to update their camera's firmware from version 1.0.2 to version 1.0.4, or those who performed the update only to find that the camera would not power on afterward, please contact the service center listed on the service information that came packaged with your EOS 20D.
Canon would like to express once again its apologies to all customers who were affected by this situation.
Please note that the actual firmware content of versions 1.0.4 and 1.0.5 is the same. If your EOS 20D already had the version 1.0.4 firmware when you purchased it, there is no problem with leaving it as is. There is also no problem if you choose to update the firmware to version 1.0.5, but the content of the firmware is the same for both versions.
This firmware update applies to cameras with firmware versions 1.0.4 or earliers. It is not necessary to perform this update on cameras that already have version 1.0.5 firmware.

No, I'm a forum junkie. The volcano is nowhere near us(although RFMSports can't exactly say that). I always log on in the middle of the night just to see if there are any fires that need to be put out.
Sleep is overrated anyway.

Interesting double usage of the middle-of-the-night wakeup call. Some of us just go to the bathroom to relieve the urge, belmondo siezes the opportunity to put out fires with it!
Question: do you typically have enough in you to put out multiple fires, or do you need assistance from another source (faucet, hose, etc.)
Good show!

Hello all...when I try to update mine when I click on firmware update it say: CF card containing fireware is required to update. Cannot update...then it has STOP. Can someone please tell me what I am doing wrong? I called the canon company and they said if you mess up trying to install the update then your waranty is voided...they say it is best to send it to them. Also, I formated the card using the camera format...is this right?
UPDATE: Nevermind...I just saw that I need a cardreader in which I don't have. :(
Nic

The file must first be extracted (run the downloaded.exe file) then copy the extracted file 20D00105.fir to the ROOT DIRECTORY of the CF card. Drag and drop it to the uppermost entry on the CF card. Then insert the CF card in the 20D, go to the menu, etc., etc.
Hope it will work this time.

Belmonto, don't feel alone.
I am such a computer and camera junkie that I spend only about 6 hours per day in bed.
My right hand, working the mouse and the shutters is so sore - it feels as if my knuckels need some grease or oil or something.
I know Mt St Helens is way up north but there is still the San Andreas fault that will keep me awake if I were you!!!
Let's not be pessimistic!

That's a fascinating statement and attitude for Canon to take... after all... they are the people who released the camera with buggy firmware in the first place. They are also the people who just released some firmware which in rare cases whilst properly installed, could render your camera inoperable...
I do hope that's just one misinformed service tech's opinion and not the official line from Canon...

I sure hope so...cause I was shocked when she said it. I never had trouble with the fireware with the 300D and I'm sure I will be able to do this one also when I get a card-reader.

Here is what you do.
Down load from web site to a folder on you C drive.
Reformat your cf card
Put it in your card reader and delete the the main folder.
Next go to the folder you have the zip file in. double click and when it ask wher to save go to browse and select you cf card reader and open and download it to thee.
Now when you put it in the camera it will now see the file. Follow the instruction to the tee from then on. The LCD screen will tell you what is happening.
At the end shut the Camera off remove the battery and then reinstall teh battery and your done.

Does anyone know how big the file will be on the CF card?
I would like to put it on a card by itself, and I would like to know how big the card needs to be.
Thanks in advance,

The download's about the size of a Large Fine Jpeg. Do you have any cards that big?
who me?
7th of October 2004 (Thu), 11:13
Does anyone know when cameras ship from the mfgr with the firmware updates? More to the point, when do we as consumers normally see these updates in new purchases?
I know that with how new the 20D is and the current demand for the new body, most places sell out of them as soon as they get them right now so I would assume that most camera stores go through the 20D stock pretty fast when they get them. Thus, no cameras sitting on the shelves with old firmware.
Just curious from those who know more than me....

In my large assortment of 4, 8, 10, 12, 16, and 32mb cards that I use to create photo albums for my digital picture frames I'm sure I can find one the right size.
What I want to do is put the 1.05 firmware on a card and file it away in case 1.06 comes out and that is screwed up. That way I'll always be able to go back to something that works (given that 1.05 is solid).
Sorry, just a little day-job thought process creeping into the hobby.

Burn it to a CD. Leave it on your HDD. It'll be easier to locate either way than if you try using a dedicated CF card for it (also cheaper!).

I don't have knowledge of Canon's distribution system, but I believe the gear comes by ship across the Pacific Pond to the Canon warehouses (in the USA, at least). I think they are already packed in the box, and I don't think the individual boxes are opened by the warehouse. For a problem as small as this, I don't think Canon would disturb that process.
Soooo, I think it will be a little while before you see 1.05 in retail packages.
But I may be wrong...

I just read the agreement again. Does this mean that even if you took it to a service center that YOU will still be responsible if the software causes problems? :? Does this also mean all cameras with updated firmware have had their warranty voided? :? What about cameras shipped with the updated software. Is their warranty voided due to firmware update? :?
It seems I'll be waiting a while longer before I buy a 20D. At least until this gets straightened out.

LOL Most software license agreements read like that. If you look closely you'll probably find a clause somewhere that say's "by installing this, you assign all rights to your imortal soul to Canon, also by proxy those of your children and your children's children for all eternity".
Most of them aren't worth the paper they are written on as local consumer protection laws take precedence.
Chris1le
7th of October 2004 (Thu), 13:43
Yeah, I know those kinds of clauses are in most all software agreements and Canon would and will face a huge PR disaster if they enforce it. 8) BUT They may try using it with the initial group of people who send their cameras in for service due to the buggy software.

apologies? If I had to send a brand new camera back to canon and wait (how long) for them to fix a problem that they caused then an apology wouldn't be enough.

I've only seen one person mention having a lockup since the 1.04 firmware was released. They might have this one licked.

Chris: That's not an unusual statement for software of any kind. Did you read Microsoft's Windows XP User Agreement when you installed it?!
And, by the way, Canon will "fix" it for you even if firmware is screwed up for free. What they don't want to happen is be liable for a $100 K shoot-gone-crapy because a photog decided to "upgrade" unsuccesfully.
Timing is everything.

Have Fun,
This lockup scenario will live forever with the 20D. I had my MKII slightly lockup, just turned camera off—then on and all was good, one time and it surely was not because of the 20D.
Just like the 10D and its waaaaaaay overplayed focus issue, anytime the 20D locks up, it will probably mean yet another thread on forum somewhere.

I agre RFM.
My Rebel locked up once this summer, and twice I got ERR99's, all within one week.
However, after that, I never experienced that problem ever again.
The 20D has been flawless for me, and if I experienced a lockup now, it wouldnt be a big deal.

That being said, all this hoopla has kept my money in my pocket until I am assured it's over with. The other thing I am concerned with is the grip and its build-quality...Doesn't sound so good.
This may be one camera I will have to touch in-person before purchasing.

However, there have been a few reports of improved 20D performance with some third party lenses, such as sigma.
