Some nice winter sun (most of the time) for the 2008 South Downs Stages Rally from the Goodwood race circuit. Of course that brings its own complications as it's at a low angle and causes harsh shadows but it's better than the alternative. This is a tarmac rally run on the race track and it feels a bit bizarre to be shooting rally cars with super-telephotos sometimes but when needs must. The organisers managed to confuse me by running things a different way from previous years so some of my favourite angles got a bit mucked up.
#1 Mark II Escort in early morning sunshine.

#2 There was a Sunbeam Tiger promised on the entry list but it never showed. Did this lovely old 911 make up for it? Not totally but it was nice to see.

#3 Here's that Mark II Escort again. Are they having fun? The co-driver seems to think so.

#4 Another Mark II Escort... OK, I admit it, I like them!

#5 Be-spoilers and body-kitted, here's one for the Puglet fans.

#6 Here's something I haven't done for years, I stuck a teleconvertor on the 120-300mm because I couldn't be bother to walk back to the car for a longer lens. Looks like I might have a competent 400mm zoom after all!

Thanks for looking, there are many more here (including photos of cars other than Escorts) if you are interested http://www.racepicsuk.com/c1452263.html.

Good series of shots again Glenn, like #3 the MkII shot the best , cocking a front wheel :D Looks like the 120-300 with converter works fine together. I know what you mean about the long lenses shooting rallying, at Croft i had the 300 with a 1.4 on, didn't seem natural  Are you doing the Wyedean?

 I had the 600mm prime out at one point. It might be a "rally" but it's run mainly on the Goodwood racetrack tarmac and you still have to deal with the large run off areas and high banking so it's more like normal circuit photography at times.
The TC on the 120-300mm does work quite well. It's something I haven't really used since I bought the 500mm prime in early 2005 - yesterday's use was just down to laziness and I am not even sure what made me stick it in my pocket when I want out to shoot but perhaps it is something I should use more often.
Yes, I plan to be lurking around the stages of the Wyedean somewhere. It will be good to get some forest rallying in. Let us hope it is an incident free event this year.

#3, #4 and #5 are top banana Glenn, particularly the puglet - an absolute cracker that one :D. Nice new avatar as well ;)!
We had a tiger turn up for the CHR today. Watched the navigator fix the steering on it by jumping out the car mid stage, running around to the drivers side and then kicking the living daylights out of the offside front wheel . Must have worked as he finished the stage and the rest of the rally :D.
Cheers,
Simon.

I tip my hat to you Sir http://homepage.ntlworld.com/geoff.hubbert/smilies/tophat.gif. That is indeed a fine display of photographic imagery.
However, will you please stop using that bloody 600L ! :D

A great series as usual Glenn, I love that Maxi 306 but he does complain it's too wide for the chicanes:lol:
I can't wait for the Wyedean so I can use my new 120-300:D
Which teleconvertor did you use?

Hi Glenn - another set of tack sharp images from your Mk 3. I always feel quite happy with my Mk 2's, until analyze what you lot are getting with the latest version. Loads of pop from this set of images. I like the fact that you can really see into the cars, and read the expressions on the faces. A great set of images Glenn ...... john.

Now that's just not fair! You had Tiger and we didn't :( I would never be so cruel to one as to kick it!
However, will you please stop using that bloody 600L ! :D
The beastie is going back into the cupboard for at least another month now!

The TC in this case was the Canon EF Extender 1.4 II. I had it with me in order to make a short-ish weather sealed option with the 70-200/2.8 if the weather was vile. As it happened the weather was nice but I stuck the thing in my pocket anyway for some reason.

I don't find a huge difference between the final images from the Mark II and the Mark III. The Mark III is certainly a better camera but the difference is not vast and I am quite happy to use them interchangeably. The second photo of this set was taken with the Mark II.
