View Full Version : Another article question

I have read a few thread in here but I still have a question.
On average, I write 2 articles per year for the Parachutist magazine. Its an in-house mag by which I mean it only goes out to people who are members of the United states Parachutist association. I get paid for those article/picture. (not a lot but I do get paid)

Recently, I have either had photos printed or written article (w/ photos) for small magazines. The attached file is the latest instance.
Obviously, I was in agreement with the editor about payment prior to sending them the article since I had my own use for it afterward but here's where my question comes in.

I did not receive any payment for any of these articles. I did use them for advertising purposes.
Should I have been firm in expected some sort of payment?

Before answering let me explain:
I've had two articles printed in two diff magazines that are FREE at many casinos/hotels in the Mesquite, Nv area. The First article was the premeire issue of that magazine. I didn't write that atricle but I gave them some pictures to use for print.
The most recent is the 2nd issue of a competing magazine. They both said they dont have a budget yet to pay but would love to add skydiving to their issues, which I agreed with and allowed them to use my images for the sake of advertising. I will be moving to a different city in 30 days and I knew this going into the agreement.

Would you have refused to write the articlce since you didnt get paid with cash but rather in advertising? As a photog, have I set a bad precidence? At the moment I am the ONLY local skydive photog that does anything with vid and stills other than to hand them to freinds and customers. I have made a few Extra $$ for selling video to a few famous people who were documenting their experience etc. but this issue seems that I got what I wanted from the magazines but I dont know how PROFESSIONAL photogs would feel.

I'll get to the NEWSPAPER article a little later in the story. I dont wanna have to many issues in one thread. it'll get confusing. (sorry if I confused you with this post, I was interuppted multiple times)

Below are some articles.

For the local newspaper

Recently I have submitted article to small local mags. Such as http://www.mesquitelifestyle.com/ (Here's a bad display of the poster I hun gon the wall at the Drop Zone.) I did not write THIS article but here's an examplehttp://im1.shutterfly.com/procserv/47b8df23b3127cceb3416b22f08300000076100BZt2rdu1bse

I think that if you are happy with the deal, then it's OK - I get the impression though, that you are not...:(

difficult one to call. the long term benefit to you might outweigh the short term lack of a fee - and the other issue is the good-will factor though you need to be careful not to let this translate into freebies forever!

I'd be inclined to chalk this one up to experience and plan ahead of time how you'll handle things next time.

Blue skies!

Should I have been firm in expected some sort of payment? Well, the mag editor & staff got paid, didn't they? But everyone has to start somewhere & you did get something out of it that you can use for advertising . I hope you only gave them one-time rights?

Thanks for the info/links.

Steve110,
I'm happy with my decision but that brings me to the news paper art that I didnt get paid for. I didnt even get credit. They were part owners of the newspaper and the first magazine. I sent them a snippet of info to see if he would like to use it. But MY miscommunication allow them to print it in the online paper, and more than likely in one of the thursday editions. I don't live in town so I have no way of knowing.
That one bothered me because of the miscommunication. I wasn't so bothered that I would cut ties with the guy. I printed up a few copies of each article for the businesses that donated to our raffle. So in the long run it was a small town, whose small businesses as well as large that donated over $500 in prizes for no reaosn other than to donate. I was able to get them some free advertising which in the long run will help us next year. So, Yes, we got a fiar trade in my opinion. But I don't want to set a freebie reputation.

Maybe next year the publications will have acquired a foundation and will be more willing to pay me.

At the very least, I have something to add to my portfolio it shows a few different circulations that printed my work; not just the skydiving mag that deals only with skydiving.

It would be a good idea to to make a PS Action to add File> Info to the fields in your images. Then, even when an image is passed on to someone who might publish it, they know where it originally came from & what rights were conveyed.
Also put all the small websized images on a CD & spend the $45 to © register them. Maybe next year the publications will have acquired a foundation and will be more willing to pay me. I've heard the "No budget" sad stories too, & suggested that they put some $s in for the next year, & that I'm willing to wait. ;)

Yes I have been meaning to do that. I do not send and photos out without meta data any more. This most recently articles' photos have the meta data on them. The oct issue; well not so much.

Thanks for the info.
