View Full Version : Subjects look like stickers

I have a Canon S30, and sometimes I download the pics to my comp in .jpeg, and sometimes in .bmp format.

The thing is, when I have them developed (I normally burn them onto a CD and bring them down to the shop), I find that the .bmp ones look a little strange in the sense that the subject, which are mainly people, look like stickers ! I know it sounds like a strange way of describing it, but it looks like the people were not originally in the photo, and they were just stuck on..

The subjects and the background just do not look the same...it kinda hard to explain....

Anyone know what I'm talking about, and experienced the same thing?

Does anyone know the reason for this strange 'sticker-like' people which seem detached from the background??

Please help.

Not sure, but my guess is that since .bmp was designed specifically for Windows it may not be fully compatible with whatever system your lab is using. Can you convert your .bmp to .tif before bringing it to the lab? That might solve the problem, as .tif is a cross-platform format. Again, just a guess. Good luck,

How do you capture as .bmp? That's not an option on my S30.

BMP graphics are...in a word, crappy. The oft-ugly images used for backgrounds since the days of Windows 3 are bitmaps. They won't scale up or down very well, because each pixel is assigned a specific colour value in the map. They are definitely to be avoided for high-quality image capture.

When I connect my camera to the computer, it will open a window for me to choose the pics that I want downloaded onto the computer. All I do I click the ones I want, and then download it. I have not changed any settings or anything. It's just that any RAW images will end up as .bmp files.

Anyone know how to make them .tiff when I download them?

Do you mean downloading or converting? RAW should download as RAW, meaning it has a .crw file tag.
Somewhere along the way you must be converting them to .bmp; otherwise the RAW files should not be usable.

If you are using Zoombrowser to convert your RAW files, you can set the default conversion format. Select File > Preferences > Image Format and set the Default Output File Format to TIFF or JPEG.

Hope that helps,

I have changed it to .tiff, but it still converts the pics into .bmp! ???

I'm stumped!

It sounds like Windows is picking up the CRW files as a BMP format. So, your files aren't being changed, they just aren't being recognized properly. You can change the association by doing the following:

1. Open "My Computer" (or any folder)
2. Go to "Tools" on the menu
3. Go to the "File Types" tab. It'll take a minute to load all the file types.
4. Scroll down to CRW, then check the association. It should be associated with the Canon RAW Image Converter. If that's the case then your problem lies somewhere else. If not, then this should help.
5. Depending on your Windows version, there may be a button to restore the setting to its original association. If not, click the "Change" button and then set the association to the RAW converter.

After this, you should be fine. Lemme know if it works.
