sorry for what must be a very dumb question but what sync cord would i need to sync a 20d to a vivitar 285hv flash?

Not sure of your location, but there's one on eBay from the UK, they post worldwide.

Well, the Vivitar 285HV comes with a short sync cord with a standard PC male plug.
The 20D has a standard PC female socket.

So all you need between them is a standard PC cord with a male connector on one end and a female connector on the other. It's a pretty standard item that you can find at camera shops or the usual online retailers.
