View Full Version : WORLD WIDE PHOTO WEEK: PART 98 -- Roads
BLS
4th of February 2008 (Mon), 09:05
The theme for this week is "Roads." Interpret this any way you like, as different and unusual interpretations are always welcome.
Here are the rules:
1. Shots need to be taken between sunrise Monday and sunset the following Sunday. Because this activity is supposed to encourage us to get out and shoot, please don't post old shots from your archives. Crummy shots and art are equally welcome -- just get out & shoot, and then share!
2. Post your shots at any time during the week.
3. Post a maximum of two shots if you're uploading them to POTN (i.e., attaching them). You can post more than two if you're linking to shots that are not hosted by POTN (i.e.,embedding them), but keep within POTN rules. Also keep within POTN rules about size. A copy of the rules can be found here: http://photography-on-the.net/forum/...ad.php?t=51049 (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=51049)
That's it! Have fun!

Roads? Where we're going, we don't need 'roads'.
And with that pitiful Doc Brown quote, I am subscribed to the thread.

How abour 'rail' roads? A quick snap while walking through Kings Cross station yesterday with my G9.

urk
Every Monday (my time) I drive ~300km to Sydney - and every Tuesday, I drive back.
Every Tuesday afternoon I get to read POTN and I go to look and see what the new theme is
dammit!
But I am now subscribed - and have an airshow to go to this coming weekend - so will try for some country roads...

Condyk -- Railroads occurred to me too.
You're sure giving that G9 a workout! Your DSLR must be getting jealous.
I never before saw a platform named with a fraction. Platform 9 3/4, not 9 or 10? Am I misunderstanding?
John -- Sorry about the time lag. So you'll be going to an airshow. Can't wait to see pix of your Country Roads. (Gee, that reminds me of a song. John Denver, was it?)

It's a Harry Potter reference...

Isn't that the platform to Hogworts School for Harry Potter?

... I love that sign!!! We visited London on vacation last summer, and the kids said we had to visit King's Cross Station just to take pics of them rolling their trolleys into the wall beneath that sign!!! ... Love it!!;)

Yeah, I discovered the Harry Potter reference afterwards. I'm not into that stuff tho' I have met Jo Rowling ;-) As I walked past today there was a couple there taking photo's and the girl was pretending to fly through the wall. I felt a bit cheated.

Nice that the UK has a bit of fun with the Rowling reference.. Dave, you know her well enough to call her "JO"? OMG :)

Not really. Just met her a few times as she donated large sums to a charity I worked for. Lovely person who deserves her success.

Who's Harry Potter?
Just kidding. I know who he is because I frequent bookstores. But that's about all I know. Never read any of the books; never saw any of the movies. So the reference went right over my head.
I guess that makes me a Potter illiterate.

Let's start thinking about a new theme a little earlier this week so that I can post it earlier.
But, of course, keep shooting & posting for "Roads."
I planned to shoot today. I awoke to snow. Now I'm not so sure. Maybe postpone until tomorrow.
Here are some ideas for a new theme.
1. The Letter B
2. Gathering Place
3. Sweet
4. Geometric
Anyone else want to add suggestions?

They're all good topics and I have no preference.

When I use roads, sometimes I have to do this ...
http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2004-8/812687/Pump.jpg
To get some of this ...
http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2004-8/812687/Texacoe.jpg
And then, once on the road, I have to avoid hitting things like this.

Nice retro toys and signs Barbara. Most of us hate to have to stop for fuel these days! Nice take on the theme. I'm still looking :(
I am putting in a vote for Geometric. Could be done inside or outside.

Now, Crissa, you know we're not allowed to post dirty pictures on POTN.;)
Interesting POV in your shot. I'm hoping that with all those feet coming toward the camera that you weren't lying in the road.

One too many cocktails at the parade, eh? Found yourself laying in the gutter.
Neat shot though, I like. :)

The crowds were INTENSE, I had a few ideas for low angle shots but couldn't pull any off due to all of the people.

Crissa, it was a pleasure to meet you this afternoon! Too bad we didn't get to meet after the parade. Guys and gals, sorry for being away.
Love the interpretations - Dave, my son loved your pic, he's a big Harry Potter fan; Barbara, your photos make an excellent storyboard; Crissa, you captured the atmosphere of the parade well.
Here's my take on the theme.Corner of Broome and Lafayette, taken last Tuesday, after the Giants parade.

Pio --Go Giants! I'm happy for them. Of course, I would have been happier for Boston. And there's that ubiquitous orange bike, but this time it's pink.
Crissa -- What a great moment to capture.

Pio, ooo, Crissa -- I just found the thread for the POTN meet in NYC for the Chinese New Year. Wow! What fun you had. I enjoyed the thread and am looking forward to more posts in it.

OK, posting late as usual, but I was waiting for this trip for some roads and cars that travel on different types of roads.
I went snowshoeing on Mt San Jacinto today and the way up from the desert floor is to take the Rotating Trams cars. First of all I will show you the road to the tram and the "road" that the tram takes to the top.
The Roads:

Now the Tram Car itself

Joayne -- It's never too late to post.
You're shots definitely convince me to stay home. Gee, I had trouble with the tram in Pittsburgh, let alone this one. Since you were snowshoeing, I'm assuming there's snow above.

Hey Barbara, thanks! It was a really exciting game, my hat is off to the Pats, they are a really strong team. It could have gone either way. About the bike, it turned pink when I applied slight desaturation :) One interesting thing about that photo of mine, can you see the tall narrow building in the background, between the two guys? That's where Heath Ledger lived.
It was a pleasure meeting Crissa and ooo. We had a grand time at the parade, I wish we could have gotten all together after it to talk. Perhaps next time.
Joayne, Love that first shot. It made me dizzy!

Yes Barbara, there is snow at the top about 2 feet left and some drifts up to 4 feet, but it is melting fast. By next week end I doubt there will be much but patches. Click Here (http://www.pstramway.com/) to learn more and see some real time pictures. By the way the tram also rotates 360 degrees twice before reaching the top ;)

Okay, that clinches it -- I will definitely not be going there.
I followed your link and enjoyed the info on the building of the tram. Thanks.
If you need snow out there, you're welcome to some of what we're getting right now. We're already housebound, and the freezing rain has yet to start.

Thanks I'll take my snow where I can drive to it.. by the way it is clear and 82 degrees here today. Too hot for February. Usually indicates a very hot summer..:(
