Hi,

I have just purchased a 24" iMac. Ive heard a lot about monitor calibration and was wondering do I need to calibrate the screen. If yes - how?

Many Thanks

Tim

Yes. Use a number of available calibrators. Spyder, Huey etc.

Is there anything I shoud set in photoshop cs3 too? Also, should I check to see what profile my lab printer uses????

Thanks

The word is that only the Spyder colorimeter works well with glossy screens on Macs. Jason - you have a glossy screen, right? Which one do you use?

I use a Spyder2Pro with dual monitors. One is glossy one is matte. They both calibrated very nicely and the nice thing about the Spyder2Pro is that it can do projectors. Very handy for my photo club.

I tried searching and this is the closest thread I could find.

According to the Spyder Elite, I should be setting the White Luminance at 120, but the lowest I can get the monitor is 226.

Should I just calibrate both my monitors to 226, or should I calibrate the iMac to 226 and the Dell 2209WA to 120.

Any thoughts?

Luminance is a suggestion for soft proofing purposes. If you are not printing, no issue. If you are printing, you'll want to set up that dell to be your softproofing monitor.

Yeah, the 24" iMac, for some reason, was designed that even if the Brightness is cranked down to zero, it still radiates better than 200cd/m2. You should have bought the 27" version. I think some have gotten the 24" screen to a lower luminance with additional software. I also read somewhere that the ColorMunki is capable of lowering it.

Shades posts this disclaimer:
Note: Shades may interfere with colour calibration software, and should not be used if colour accuracy is critical.

Has anyone tried using ND gel on their screen to reduce the intensity. Does it effect the colors?

Maybe Cinegel 3762, 3763 or 3724 http://www.rosco.com/us/filters/cinegel.asp

I thought it was only the Elite that would do projectors. . .

Just to confuse everyone, when DataColor introduced the Spyder3 line, they renamed the top of the line from Pro to Elite. The older Spyder2 Pro can do projectors. The current Spyder3 Pro cannot.

Thanks for the clarification. I'm about to buy one and am trying to decide if I want to spend the extra money for the elite, but I'm thinking that the Pro will be good enough.

You can do a software upgrade at the datacolor website from a pro to elite but only certain part no.; mine is S3P100. I have the spyder pro 3 only.

Hi all,

I am also about to purchase Spyder 3 Pro. It should not have issue calibrating imac 24" glossy screen rite? It's just that I read a review somewhere that it's not good with glossy screen.

Could someone that have used it on imac 24" glossy please confirm?

If you have concerns about using the Spyder3 Pro with a glossy screen, why even consider it? Buy an EyeOne Display 2 instead. Rite?

I wrote a blog post about calibrating iMac monitors (http://blog.bretedge.com/2010/01/12/the-imac-calibration-conundrum/) that you might find useful.

I've been using CEDP software for nearly two years, both with an X-Rite DTP-94 puck and a Spyder3 puck. It's absolutely better than the software included with the Spyder3 Elite or EyeOne Display2.
