View Full Version : A couple questions about ZenFolio

I currently have smugmug, which I am generally happy with, but my work blocks it. It is classified as "Online Storage" which is blocked. For some reason, Zenfolio is not blocked. Sometimes I like to show my colleagues my pictures and I can't with Smugmug. So anyway, here are my questions:

1. Can I easily embed photos from Zenfolio to POTN with exif info? It can be done with smugmug, but in a convaluted difficult way.

2. Is there a convenient plugin for lightroom so I can upload photos directly from LR to zenfolio? Smugmug provides this for lightroom.

3. Is there a "transfer tool" so I can easily move my smugmug photos to zenfolio?

4. Can I disable right clicking with zenfolio (yeah, I know a determined person can still get the photos, but this is just a deterant)

That's all for now.

I moved from smugmug pro to Zenfolio during their introductory period.

1. If your photo has exif, I should show up with exif anywhere, isn't it? I havn't tried with zenfolio but maybe you can, my site is in my sig.

2. I thikn there are some plugins, I haven't used them. Look at Zenfolio API section. I know their tool will even let you download stuff from your galleries which was't available on smugmug.

3. Wish there was.

4. Right click is disabled by default.

No, when I embed a photo to the forum, the exif is not included. Yes, the photos on smugmug do have exif, but it doesn't stick when I embed - unless I do this convaluted process.

Thanks for the other answers.

There is a lightroom plugin for uploading of photos, however I haven't used it myself. Also their is a recently added Migration tool under the free tools area, called migrator, it doesn't specify whether it works from smugmug to zenfolio, but looks promising.

Right click is disabled as the previous forumer indicated, also you can disable full res. downloads etc. for greater security if you upload full res. files.

As for exif info included when posting to other sites, I don't believe this is possible yet...

Check out the free tools section, its slowly adding more services...

1. Can I easily embed photos from Zenfolio to POTN with exif info? It can be done with smugmug, but in a convaluted difficult way.
Pictures are easily embedded. Zenfolio gives you a choice of 7 image sizes from 80 px to 1100 px, plus your original. Exif information is embedded with the image.

In Opera, I can right click and select "Image Properties" to get the info. In Firefox, I used to be able to right click and select "Properties" to get Exif info with the FxIF plug-in, but this no longer works. I'm not sure what causes this, because this only happens with Zenfolio images. Now I use the Opanda plug-in with Firefox and everything is fine. Internet Explorer requires the Opanda plug-in as well.

2. Is there a convenient plugin for lightroom so I can upload photos directly from LR to zenfolio? Smugmug provides this for lightroom.
There is a plugin for Lightroom and it works very well. The same person makes the Lightroom plugin for Zenfolio, Smugmug, Flickr, and Picasa.

3. Is there a "transfer tool" so I can easily move my smugmug photos to zenfolio?
There is a free transfer tool listed on Zenfolio's website, but I did not use it. It supports all major services.

4. Can I disable right clicking with zenfolio (yeah, I know a determined person can still get the photos, but this is just a deterant)
There is no right clicking in Zenfolio. You can't even right click your own images. They do offer several levels of protection for individual images or entire galleries.

Great - It sounds like I may give it a try. The migrator tool is not available for mac, so it looks like I am going to have to break out the old windows laptop - blech!!! :)

The original size pictures on smugmug would show the exif, not the reszied ones that they create. Atleast that's how I remember.

Perhaps, but I am not going to post an original size image on this forum because it would go against forum rules. And people with dial up would never wait around to see my images.

Original size doesn't mean original from camera. You pp your picture and then say resize to 800x600 and upload to smugmug. As far as smugmug is concerned, this is original file.

That's what I do. But exif has never been included when I post images here. Doesn't matter though, because I am currently migrating my photos from smugmug to zenfolio. The process seems to be working pretty well.

^Why are you switching? I'm about to choose between the two and Zenfolio really won me allowing me being able to use my own domain with 2nd level purchase while smugmug I have to buy the pro account which is like 3x as much.

But why are you switching? Kinda want to be sure. I hear they are working on allowing users to edit their pages more.

Mainly because my work's automatic filtering blocks smugmug because of "online storage" But for some reason, zenfolio doesn't get blocked. So now I can look at my pictures at work and show my colleagues. Other than that, there is no really big reason. In fact, I'd rather not have to relearn a new photo sharing site. But I really like being able to see it at work.
