View Full Version : How to? Wrong side of track

Sometimes out in the desert I have to shoot from the wrong side of the track with respect to lighting. If the breeze is blowing the dust toward the sun, I sometimes have to shoot into the sun so I am not standing in a dust cloud all day. I am considering buying a 580EX to put some light on the shady side of the race cars but this will kill my 8 FPS sequence shots.

Any other ideas for this problem?

Here is an example.

If you are looking to keep 8fps and still maintain a good recycle rate you should probably start looking at some of the high end Metz flash guns. Especially seeings as the backlighting out there can get very aggresive.
They recycle very quickly and can output a heck of a lot more than a 580ex :)

Hope this helps.

Craig.

Thanks for the tip. I am looking at Metz and Quantum. They are a bit more expensive but both look more capable than the 580EX for what I want.

how about an assistant holding a reflector?

Maybe not the ideal way to do it but if you have to shoot in a situation ike that you could always add a little PP'ing to it. I added a little fill light and a few other small tweaks and I think it looks pretty good.

And so I don't get lynched, I am not saying to just snap away and fix it later, just that sometimes situations call for a little "post creativity" :)

I've tried that but at a point it just doesn't look quite right any more to me.

Here is what I got with a quick 2 minutes.

Yes, that does look a little better but it's still a little darker than I like and is starting to get that processed look. The guys that buy my shots are frequently buying them to give to the sponsors and all of the sponsor decals have to look good. Thanks for the comps.

Yeah I thought that is why you wanted them a little "brighter", to show off the sponsors.
