My first attempt at embedding, I hope it works. I arrived late and couldn't get close so had to jostle in the crowd holding the 70-200. harsh lighting blew most shots out... i hope people realise now that I'm not dodgy (see the Letz zep thread), just an average photographer

Nice job Tony - looks like Dave Vanian has gone for the Bono look!

Thank you for that :), I must admit that not having seen them for so many years, I was still expecting the Gothic look. I have really struggled with some of the venues around here, the lighting is either very dim or too harsh and blows the faces out. Whilst the IS of the 70-200 is supposed to allow hand holding down to 1/60 it is a bit hit and miss with a large failure rate, but I suppose it is all about that one good shot :D

i think your metering system is being fooled...on that last shot, you are shooting Tv and the lens is stopped down to f/8, but dave's face is still blown out.
i would spot meter to get an average spotlight reading, then use M w/ those settings, and adjust as needed (or use Av and dial EC as conditions warrant, chimping all the while).
good to see some photos of this band...i've not seen the Damned since that '90 tour when both the Captain and Brian James were playing. i did run into Stu Cooke @ at Freeze / Gang Green show last April, and got a couple of good shots of him playing w/ The Freeze for a song (it's on his myspace page).

Nice shots. Last time I saw them on the Warped tour, the kids hadn't a clue who they were. They had lost the goth look by then too. Got to chat with the band on their bus after their set. Really nice band.

Thanks for that, I've since had more success by spot metering as you suggest :) it was funny to see Dave run to the side of the stage whilst singing and come back with a broom to knock the spotlight to one side, it was incredibly harshly lit over his mike..

OMG! The Damned are still playing? Awesome.
Dave's looking quite Bono'ed. Yikes.

My fondest memory is seeing The Damned and The Cure on The Young Ones back in the day. :p
Remember the Halloween specials? The Damned did "Nasty."

Remember that one very well, the Young Ones show was actually called "Nasty"

Nice images, *bad* exposure.
B/W conversions aren't good either.
If you work on those points, you can get some very nice shots probably.
Frankly, all these shots *would have been* nice, but are technically below-par.
Then again; the technical bit is the easiest part, and it looks like you already master the hard part (getting nice image) ;)

Thanks René, as a sports photographer I dont make a particularly good 'performance' photographer :)..... but I'm working on it :) I tend to use the 70-200 too much in very low light perhaps instead of getting up close with the 24-70.... does anybody here use a monopod in these situations ?

Getting closer often means getting more "engaging" images.
It also means having a lot more background to deal with (which also will be sharper)....
I use a monopod with my 80-200 and occasionally with shorter lenses. Helps a lot.
