Deceided to take the plunge and upgrade my lens lineup.
I currently have the Sigma 18-50 DC which I'll keep for the time being (until I can afford the 17-40) and 2 Canons the 28-80 & 80-200 kit lenses that came with my 500N. I am looking to replace the last 2. What I have nearly committed to is the 70-200 f4L (£499) and 24-85 f3.5 usm (£259). I know most peoples thoughts on the former, any comments on the latter or alternatives in the same price range.

I can recommend the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 instead. I'm very happy with this lens so far - it has great optics, a constant 2.8 aperture, quite nice build quality and fairly fast and relatively not very loud AF.

You will see a lot of votes for the Tamron 28-75 I think. However, the Canon 24-85 is a good lens and has the benefit of a bit more at both ends. I find the wide end very useful. I went for it mainly because it's smaller than the Tamron, which makes for a lovely light walkaround lens. I'm very pleased with the photos my 24-85 takes.
The Tamron comes with a hood whereas the Canon doesn't. Someone else can probably confirm, but I suspect the Canon L glass comes with a hood.

Canon L glass comes with a hood, so does the tamron.
I currently have the Tamron 28-75 and the canon 70-200 F4 amongst others. The tamron is going to be optically superior to the canon 24-85, but the build quality may not be quite as good.
Since you have the 18-50 at the moment and you are looking at the 70-200 that is only 20mm that you don;t have covered. You could maybe save the money til you can afford something more useful...
